Every October Cara and her family become inexplicably accident-prone. Some years it’s bad, like the season when her father died, and some years it’s just a lot of cuts and scrapes. They know what they need to do—stock up on bandages and painkillers, cover sharp table edges with padding, banish knives to locked drawers, switch off electrical items. They buckle up, they batten down.
But this accident season—when Cara; her ex-stepbrother, Sam; and her best friend, Bea, are seventeen—none of that will make a difference.
Because Cara is starting to ask questions. And the answers were never meant to be found.
This is one of those “it’s me, not you” books. It’s easy to see why this is such a highly praised book: it is atmospheric and exquisitely written. The problem is, it just wasn’t for me.
Accidents happen. Our bones shatter, our skin splits, our hearts break. We burn, we drown, we stay alive.
Every October, 17-year-old Cara’s family becomes extremely accident-prone. They banish knives to locked drawers, cover the corners of tables and desks, and hide electrical items. Yet, no matter how hard they try, despite all the precautions they take, accidents still manage to find them. But why? And how can they stop it?
We’re afraid of the accident season. We’re afraid of how easily accidents turn into tragedies. We have had too many of those already.
Cara is a protagonist that, while she might not be especially memorable or special, has an air of authenticity to her. She feels like a real 16-year old girl, and it’s so easy to relate to her because of that.
The relationship between Cara, her sister Alice and stepbrother Sam is what makes this such a unique novel. The dynamics between them seems more like a relationship between three friends than a relationship between siblings, and it’s almost easy to forget they’re related. (I say almost because, like all siblings, they constantly tease and annoy one another.)
What made the book difficult to connect with, for me personally, was the magical realism scattered throughout the pages. Magical realism is all good and well, but it’s just not for me. As someone who is completely left-brained and powered by logic and facts, it’s a struggle for me to take in and believe these fantasy situations – especially when they’re disguised in a contemporary setting – and this was no exception. (Fantasy in a contemporary setting just does not mix in my mind).
All in all, I am sure this is going to be a huge hit with anyone who loves magical realism, an eerie yet magical atmosphere, and gorgeous writing.
Unfortunately, I’m not one of those people.
About Zoe
Zoe is a critical reviewer. When she’s not reviewing, you can find her performing in plays / musicals, doing gymnastics, or designing websites.
To be honest, I have a hard time accepting the plot element from which this book is based on. So in that manner, I think I’ll feel the same way as you.

But I have been reading reviews that do not shine this book in a good light so I’ll skip on this one ;)

BUT ZOE I THOUGHT YOU AND CAIT WERE REVIEW TWINS!! AND SHE LOVED THIS ONE. Oh well, I guess magical realism isn’t for everyone (but it definitely makes me want to read it more…)

I KNOW. *hides in shame* This is one of the few books we’ve disagreed on. Magical realism just isn’t my thing, but I know Cait loves it. Definitely curious to see what you think of it Emily!

I read just a little of this and I was like hmm, I don’t know. So I returned it to the library. I have a feeling I’ll be one of those it’s not for me readers. Nice review!

The first time I tried to read this I DNFed it in about the first 10%! It freaked me out so much that my anxiety kept me up very late one night after reading it!
Great review though!

Sorry this one didn’t work for you!! I was on the opposite side and loved it because of the magical realism and its whimsy. But if that isn’t your thing I totally get how this one wouldn’t be for you!

Magical Realism can be tough to swallow at times, it’s a shame this didn’t work for you but I’m glad that other aspects of the book were more in your favour! Lovely review, Zoe.

Aw, shame you didn’t love this one more Zoe. I was actually SO surprised when I found I really enjoyed it. I’d seen a few positive reviews on blogs, but I thought it wouldn’t appeal to me in the way it actually did once I read it. I’m finding I do have a soft spot for this genre, though. ;) Lovely review!

I can definitely see how you liked it so much Kara; I have a feeling I would have as well if I was more into the magical realism. Thanks!

Though I did enjoy this one a bit more than you, I can TOTALLY understand where you’re coming from. I have difficult with magical realism as well, and this story was definitely a struggle for me. I still don’t think I 100% understand what I read. LOL Fantastic review!! <3

I am glad to here Cara feels like a realistic teen. Don’t see enough of that in YA these days. :) Sorry to hear the magic realism made it hard to connect. It’s definitely a genre that is not for everyone! I’m sort of glad you didn’t like it because of the genre instead of it’s a shitty book. I say this because I really want to read it! lol :D

See I love my fantasy books, but magical realism is hard for my mind to grasp as well, especially when it happens in a contemporary novel. So I can see why this one wasn’t for you! Wonderful review though Zoe!

Interestingly enough, I thought I’d hate this book from the premise, so I almost didn’t grab it at BEA. Then I ended up freaking loving it. Magical realism is kind of hit-or-miss.

A lot of people seemed to give this book a pass, so maybe there are a lot of “it’s me, not you people.” That cover is so pretty, though. *sigh*

I have been seeing magical realism coming through more and more in books, but I don’t think I have ever read a book which includes it, so I am not sure if it is for me yet or not. I am looking forward to whenever I am going to be able to try it out though. Sorry that this one isn’t for you…
