She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor’s secret collection.

She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.

She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can’t abide. Like having to marry someone she’s never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—secrets that may unravel her world—even as she feels herself falling in love.

REVIEW

DNF at 225 pages.

I started The Kiss of Deception completely expecting an amazing read, especially since I just finished binge-watching Reign (any fans out there?). Instead, I spent most of the time reading like this:

The plot was surprisingly predictable and simplistic. It also housed a lot of WTF moments, for example:

1. Lia and Pauline had undergone no formal training whatsoever and yet they manage to outrun hordes of soldiers and bounty killers-all while surviving out in the woods which are supposedly swarming with barbarians.

2. No one was suspicious of Lia. A new girl, who looks, sounds and acts different from everyone around you.

This brings me to another problem with the book, the characters:

1. At first, I liked Lia’s desire to take her life into her own hands. But then I got irritated because she couldn’t seem to understand that it was for the good of her kingdom and all those who live in it! She has got to be one of the most naïve and selfish characters I’ve had the “pleasure” of encountering!

2. Rafe’s a very confusing character. Some scenes portray him as a bipolar jackass. Sometimes, he says shit like this (a few weeks after their first meeting):

“When I’m not with you, I wonder where you are. I wonder what you’re doing. I think about how much I want to touch you. I want to feel your skin, your hair, run every dark strand through my fingers. I want to hold you, your hands, your chin. I want to pull you close and never let you go.”

3. Kaden was dull from the beginning. I felt nothing for him the entire time I was reading.

The romance completely overshadowed the rest of the plot. The Kiss of Deception had so much potential. It could’ve been a riveting romance-adventure or a romance-fantasy novel. Instead it chose to be a full-on romance novel.

All in all, I was really disappointed. I really did expect to love this book. However, a lot of people say in their reviews that the book gets better in the second half. So, people who are very patient and can bear a few boring chapters might enjoy the book!

  1. Oh no.. This book is sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read. And until now, I was very much looking forward to jumping into it. I’ve heard really good things about it but the way you put it, I’m scared I’m not going to like it. We will see, I guess. Great post! :)

  2. I’m so glad I didn’t pick this book up. Usually I don’t let reviews sway me, because everyones reading taste is different, but I have seen more DNF on this book than I have any other book.
I cannot stand dull or bland characters. character Development is a crucial part of reading any book.

    Great Review :)

  3. I’m so sorry that you weren’t able to enjoy this one as much as you’d hoped Dyan, but from your review I can see why aspects of it didn’t work out for you. Thank you for your honest opinion and I hope your next read is a lot more enjoyable! :)

  4. I agree with pretty much everything you said — except I didn’t DNF. I was surprised at how predictable the first half seemed when everyone had been raving about it so much, and Rafe definitely creeped me out at points. But the the MAJOR TWIST came but it only made me angry and confused, and it didn’t in any way redeem the first half. The ending intrigued me, but why should I invest my time in reading a sequel when I don’t trust that it will be any better than the majority of the 1st book? Believe me, DNF-ing was the way to go.

    1. Even though you agree with me, you finished it?! You must have the patience of a saint! xD

I’m really sorry that you didn’t like the twist. Some of the reviews I read say that that was when the book got better for them. Glad you sort-of liked the ending, though!

  5. Ah no. :( I’m so sorry you didn’t like this one, Dyan! I bought a copy not long after its release because I was really excited for it. Since then, I’ve heard mixed things about it and I’m not as excited…but sometimes I am. Even though you’re review is a bit disheartening, I’m curious as to what I’ll think of it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Dyan! :)

    1. I was really excited about it too! Though, from what I’ve gathered, you either really really hate it, or really really love it! I hope that you’re one of the people who enjoy it! :)

  6. Yeah, I’ve heard some not so fabulous things about this one and this pretty much confirms it! The romance taking over the plot is not something I appreciate AT ALL. Definitely passing this one

    Lovely review, Dylan!

  7. Woaah woahh I was so excited when I saw this review come up haha I did not expect it to be DNF-ed.

I’ve been wanting to read this, but I didn’t buy it. I’m sorry the book was pretty annoying. Lia sounds like a really annoying character, by the way asdfjkl;. And I really HATE it when the romance overshadows the plot. That’s the saddest that any aspect in a book could ruin D:

  8. ahhhh, this is sadness. I want to read this one, but, well, I’m not rushing for it, because I’ve heard quite a few bloggers mention it was a little slow/dry, etc. The unrealistic elements are scaring me too. WAH! I WANTED IT TO BE GOOD.

    1. It was sooooo incredibly slow! I was having trouble keeping my eyes open while reading it! It could be good for you too, you know? Lots of people enjoyed it! :)

  9. So many people seem to dislike this book! And everything you’ve listed definitely puts me off the book, especially the crappy characters and dominating romance. To be honest, the cover kind of puts me off it as well, not gonna lie. Not the biggest fan of that cover…

  10. Hahaha! The reason I wanted to buy this book in the first place was because of the cover! Oh well. Apparently, I have horrible taste in these kind of things!

While a lot of people hated it, a lot of people gave it five stars! Lol. This book might very well be the best book in the world, but you wouldn’t know it because you skipped out on it! (Totally stolen from HSM btw :D)

  11. Ah, I am sorry this didn’t work out for you! I got this one recently, after hearing that I “had” to read it. I am a bit wary now, but I will probably still give it a shot. Though I probably could live with the romance situation, I do NOT like that the characters weren’t likable, that is one thing that will cause me to DNF for sure! Rafe sounds kind of… obsessed? Creepy? Either way, it doesn’t sound good! Hopefully your next book will be better!

  12. I GET YOU, Dyan!! I did finish this book, and was even mildly entertained by that time I finished it, but MAN. Princess . . . *shakes head* Princess needed to STAHP. Reluctant assassins drive me nuts too, and that whole super twisty twist? So obvious. Great review, but sorry you hated it. *commiserates*
