This is where I share some totally pointless things!

My classroom is what I’d like to call Fangirls Galore. We have a bunch of bookish fangirls, K-pop/J-pop fangirls, anime fangirls and a lot more. I actually didn’t realize this until a couple of weeks ago, but yes–our classroom is just full of fangirls.

So what is a fangirl, exactly?

For those who do not know (although I’m pretty sure you all do), here are a two (of the many) possible definitions for the word “fangirl” from Urban Dictionary:

  1. “A general term for a female fan of something.” –LupinDrake
  2. “A rabid breed of human female who is obsessed with either a fictional character or an actor.” –Sita Snape

The Typical Reactions of a Fangirl

Not sure if the person you’re talking to is a fangirl? Observe said female for a little while, particularly while she’s reading. If she starts acting /saying things like…

… then yes, you are probably staring at a fangirl right in the face.

Why do fangirls fangirl?

WE NEED TO LET OUT OUR FEELINGS, OKAY? It is just not right to keep our feels inside. They need to be shared–spreading the feels is a great talent we fangirls possess, aside from our extreme book-pushing.

We fangirls are usually part of a fandom, and we need to let it all go to those people who have similar interests as ours!

What about the fanboys?!

Of course, we’re not going to leave you guys out–we love fangirls and fanboys alike! Fanboys are generally similar to fangirls… except that, well, they’re boys and not girls.

More power to the fangirls and fanboys of the world!

  5. YES TO BEING A FANGIRL AIMEE!!!! There’s nothing better than being really excited about a book (or anything really) and then finding other people who are equally excited and sharing that enthusiasm together. It’s what makes blogging so much fun for me. I know if I love something I can run to twitter and go DID ANYONE ELSE LOVE THIS?!!!!!!!! and likely get a number of squeeing affirmatives:) Love it!

I am a total fangirl XD I get really excited and giddy and start jumping around sometimes… Whenever Vampire Diaries or Reign is on I start spinning in circle and laughing… It’s just something I do. If I fangirl online with friends, I use shouty caps a lot. Sometimes I use “eeeeek” or “sqeeeee” or lots of exclamation points to show my excitement. Unapologetic fangirl and proud ;)

  7. WE JUST HAVE SO MANY EMOTIONS! XD Hahahaha the gifs are hilarious, I love the one “Yes, I would have his babies”. I always fangirl so much after a book I really like, but since none of my uni friends are readers I fangirl with all you fellow awesome bloggers hehe :D Great post, fangirls for life!

    Anyway…yes to this! Being a fangirl is definitely an art. I completely agree that some authors just give us incredible emotions and we need to discuss our thoughts with people who have the same love for the books as us. Thanks for sharing Aimee, and, as always, BRILLIANT post! <3

    I’m definitely a fangirl when it comes to all forms of media (books, movies, video games, tv shows etc) and I’m not ashamed. Being passionate about things you enjoy with others that feel the same is such a fun way to express yourself. I definitely admit to spending far too much time on tumblr because of that reason and from staring at all of these amazing gif sets.

    I think everybody has a bit of inner fangirl in them. What sets everybody is a part is how much they let this fangirl out ;p

  12. Fangirl-ing over Britney Spears since 2003 and after that the fangirl life continues ’til eternity. I can’t imagine life not fangirl-ing over celebrities and some stuff (books, concerts, shoes, pretty things, food – yes legit!) I am very multi-fandom hence the “I AM ALWAYS EXCITED” aura over me. Love the gifs! <3

I’ve yet to come across a literary character I would die to have babies with, but the Ted Mosby GIF sums me up quite nicely. Fantastic post, Aimee! Let’s make our fangirl flag fly forevuh. Heehee.

  14. Awesome post, Aimee! I can definitely say I am a fangirl although I have to say there are some different connotations between a fangirl and a fanboy (at least that’s how I understand). Fangirling usually does what you just mentioned (going kyaa! Lots of feels galore, etc.) while fanboys are usually more… negative in meaning, more “rabid” and “illogical”, like:

    Boy A: I hate Final Fantasy. It’s so cliche.
    Fanboy: WHAT DID YOU SAY THAT IS SO NOT TRUE FINAL FANTASY IS THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME WHAT THE HELL YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING WAIT TILL YOU MEET SEPHIROTH!!!!!
    Boy A: …fanboy.

    The meanings probably are different from one another, but this is one of them from what I know :D Fanboys are more compulsive from what I know fo them XD Fangirls are cooler ;) JK!

  15. The 2nd definition is very close to what fangirls/boys are. :) As far as I know, everyone is a fangirl or fanboy of something. It’s impossible to meet someone who doesn’t like something. Well, if there is then I pity them because they haven’t found that thing that will make them happy.

  16. I AM A PROUD FANGIRL! Hahaha, yes I agree. Some people (particularly my new blockmates) are surprised with how much I fangirl over books and fictional characters. But their getting used to it. I totally agree. As fangirls we cannot contain our feelings to ourselves. It needs to be shared and heard. As for fanboys, I hope they come out more! :D Its kinda sad because some think that being a fanboy is embarassing. So not true. For you guys there, fanboying is actually a bit charming and cute. :> I know because I’ve seen it. haha.

  19. Being a fangirl is the best! There’s just so much happiness in investing time in beautiful, thrilling, awesome things. I usually try not to say too many fangirl things out loud unless I know the other person would agree. I don’t want to scare anyone. :) This is an awesome post Aimee!

  20. I’m definitely a fangirl! “I just have a lot of feelings” is something I have all the time, for books and movies. I love that feeling of.. being completely overwhelmed and wrapped inside a story. I often do happy dancing. I think it’s only natural to be passionate about something and I’m proud of it :)

  21. You are so right, Aimee! We just have to let the feelings go, otherwise it’s not fun or it’s just plain sad. I’m a fangirl of so many thins and so many people and I’m proud of it. And when I meet fellow fangirls of the same fandom, omg best feeling ever!

  24. Ahahahaah! I am a certified fangirl for K-pop, Lee Min Ho, Sirius Black, and other characters, artists, and books that are worth fangirling over. I am not a student anymore but I still fangirl when I was still working in an office environment. Bwahahah. My boss and my other colleagues were always irritated whenever I swoon over something. But I can’t help it!

    Fangirling is definitely cathartic. And it isn’t as if fangirling is new because our parents have also fangirled or fanboyed over Nora and Vilma during those good ol’ days. So YES to FANGIRLING! We should be proud of it even if it annoys a lot of people!

  25. I’m not really a fangirl. I mean, I like certain books and movies, but I don’t really obsess and hyperventilate over them. I actually wrote a post about this on my blog called I’m Not Much of a Fangirl. I do have lots of friends that are fangirls, though. They fangirl over a lot of things: manga, anime, K-pop, Exo (I think I’m spelling that right), The Mortal Instruments, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Sherlock, etc. I have to comfort lots of people with ripped feels at my lunch table.

  30. I JUST CAN’T SUPPRESS MY LOVE FOR DISNEY (ALICE IN WONDERLAND PARTICULARLY). I DON’T KNOW WHY, I JUST GET A FEELING IN MY STOMACH THAT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM AND HAVING A ROOM FULL OF MERCHANDISE WOULD SATISFY IT ONLY A LITTLE BIT.
