Despite what her name might suggest, Heart has zero interest in complicated romance. So when her brilliant plan to go to prom with a group of friends is disrupted by two surprise invites, Heart knows there’s only one drama-free solution: flip a coin.

Heads: The jock. He might spend all night staring at his ex or throw up in the limo, but how bad can her brother’s best friend really be?

Tails: The theater geek…with a secret. What could be better than a guy who shares all Heart’s interests–even if he wants to share all his feelings?

Heart’s simple coin flip has somehow given her the chance to live out both dates. But where her prom night ends up might be the most surprising thing of all…

REVIEW

After all the early reviews I’ve seen raving about how adorable this one was, I just had to see for myself! Indeed, that adorable cover’s a plus. I should get a physical copy for my collection once it’s out, huh?

The story revolves around Heart–whose name I actually like–a girl who planned to go to prom with a group of friends. But then, to her surprise, two very different guys ask her to prom for two very different reasons! I loved the premise (no matter how unlikely it is to happen, at least from what I think) and how cute it was. It was a great opportunity to show the world that even the crappiest days can turn into the happiest ones (you’ll find out why when you read it).

Heart herself was a pretty clumsy girl, in a cutesy-funny way, even if sometimes I wanted to smack her across the head for being dense. She considered both sides of the coin (literally) and really wanted to choose which date she thinks will benefit her more. Okay, well, she basically wanted to pick whoever she thought needed her more, which was considerate of her. What was stupid was that she didn’t even consider going with her friends anymore! Psh! But all’s well that ends well.

My favorite thing about the novel was that the side characters were also given importance and weren’t boring at all! Heart’s friends really supported our heroine (most of them, anyway) and were very protective of her. Despite her ditching them, they were there by her side throughout all the prom disasters (which was a lot). Chase was my favorite–he was super adorable and was really close with Heart, even giving her nicknames using other internal organs, such as “Pancreas” or “Lung.”

Now, I can’t talk a lot about the guys without spoiling things, but let me just say this: you guys are in for a surprise. Okay, maybe you do figure out this surprise around 30-40% in, but it’s still a surprise! Fine, I’ll just say a few things about them. Ryan was really cute and I loved his friendly, chillax relationship with Heart. Troy was a depressed ass, mostly. I didn’t like him at all and wanted to throw him out the window.

With a fun, easy to get writing style, hilarious main characters and a funky supporting cast, Ask Again Later‘s a contemporary that’ll stay stuck with me for a while. I would recommend it to fans of Miranda Kenneally’s Hundred Oaks series.

  1. Oooo this sounds really cute indeed! Nowadays (after lots of failed attempts) I try my best to avoid high school romance novels. So I basically ran away as fast I could when I first saw this book on Netgalley. But now I think about it, my preconceived prejudice may have stopped me from a enjoyable heartwarming read. I will have to check this one out myself! Nice Review Aimee :)

    1. I see. High school romance novels are usually dramatic and angst-y, but this one’s quite the opposite! It was such a fun, fluffy read. I hope you enjoy, Angel! <3

    1. That’s too bad, Jules. D: I really enjoyed Catching Jordan. If you’re a fan of Kasie West, though, I would also recommend this to you! :)

  2. This does sound really cute even though I’m not much into contemporary reads! And it’s nice that the potential love triangle doesn’t sound like a hard decision! :)

  3. I’ve been hearing good things about this one, and I’m glad to hear you agree. The characters all sound lovable (especially Chase – I’m already jealous of the protagonist’s group of friends), and the story sounds adorable. I may have to pick this book up sometime. :)

Oh, and since I’m a first time visitor, I thought I’d say I love your blog design – it perfectly blends cute and creepy.

  4. I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t read this book. Oh well, I’ll have time to read it on my way to Italy lol. That’s gonna be a killer plane ride. I’m glad this book was enjoyable overall for you (: Though some parts are of course unrealistic it still seems like an super cute read! Lol I understand completely know what you mean by dense characters. Sometimes you just want to scream at them when they’re being completely oblivious. I’m glad the side characters were relevant and just weren’t you know…tossed on the side :P I think having well developed side characters can truly add worlds of depth to an story.

    Wonderful review Aimee [:

    1. Italy? Whoa, I’m jealous. I think we’re going to Japan this summer and I cannot wait! I just hope our plans push through. ^_^ Sometimes dense characters are cute, but sometimes they get on my nerves. -_- The side characters were definitely cute and I loved them! :)

  5. I totally want to try this! Intense cover love, of course (hehe) but OH that’s awesome that the side characters are actually well written! I LOVE it when they’re fleshed out as well. I’m a bit worried about Heart ditching them, though….ack. I’m just so curious about this one I’m going to need to beg/borrow/steal it. (Okaaaaay, I won’t steal it. lol) XD

    1. I adore this cover a lot, Cait! <3 The side characters were all pretty interesting in their own ways. Heart had her reasons, although they were rather stupid, lol. Stealing is good! *evil laugh*

Ha, almost everyone talks about how awesome Ryan is. Cannot wait to meet him:) Even though you didn’t find it perfect I’m glad you found this enjoyable as a whole:) Great review, Aimee!

  7. I really do need cutesy books to read, and this one sounds like a really good candidate for it. I think, if this happened to me, my friends would definitely be supportive that I ditched them. I mean, isn’t it one of the dreams of girls? To be asked to prom. Anyway, those opposed are just jealous, imo. LOL! Anyway, this will be on my tbr because I like cutesy reads :D

    1. I need more cute books as well–you know, to lift my mood and such. :) I think so, too, but the problem was that Heart was ditching them for pretty stupid reasons, lol! Anyway, it was still an adorable read overall. ;)

  8. I want to guess what the surprise is! Did they really want to go together? ;) I want to read this. I love the Hundred Oak Series too, so yeah, I’m all for reading this book soon.

  9. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this one, so I guess I’ll have to give it a try soon, eh? Especially considering I’m a theatre fan, and one of the characters is said to be an actor. But, anyway, I’m SO glad this worked for you! I’m a huge fan of light fluffy contemporaries, and this sounds like just the one! And the fact that the side characters are actually well-developed (*gasp*!) is just amazing in itself. ;)

Thanks for sharing Aimee, and, as always, brilliant review! :D

    1. I think, so far, I’ve only come across one negative review of this one from a trusted reviewer, so I guess this is the type of book that majority of people will enjoy. :) There’re only a few theater references in this one, though. Hooray for fluffy contemporaries! Thanks so much, Zoe!

  10. Yay I’m so glad you liked this one! I agree, Heart’s friends were so fun, and the fact she never considered saying no to both of them and just going with her friends was a little weird, but I understand why the author went that way, just to make the two parallels more clear-cut and dry. Fantastic review, Aimee! <33

    1. Although I myself would’ve probably went with my friends (and invited one of the guys–you obviously know who, lol) and ditched the other guy, the story was adorable and well thought-of. I can’t wait for more by this author. <3

  11. Aw this sounds super cute! I’ll definitely have to give it a read at some point (looks like it came out yesterday, so I should probs grab a copy sometime). Not too sure about the MC’s name though lol. I mean, “Heart”? Really? haha

    1. I want a physical copy of this one to display–it’s so pretty. x_x I actually like the name, although not a lot of people have it. There’s actually a local actress here named Heart and I’m a fan of her, lol!

  12. Awww, yay! I’m so glad you liked this one! It’s so much fun and though Heart definitely deserves a smack on the head sometimes, she’s completely lovable. :) I do think it’s a surprise that you see coming pretty quickly in, but I think you’re supposed to be able to tell that it’s the right thing for Heart for a long time. I haven’t read the Hundred Oaks books, but if you compare them to this, I will definitely check them out. Great review Aimee! :)

  13. This book was so adorable! I definitely wished Heart would stand up for herself sometimes, but yeah, all’s well that ends well! I totally adored Schroeder, too! I just loved the scene at the end with the trunk hahaah. I’m glad Heart and Ryan got to know each other, their friendship was really sweet. Lovely review Aimee!
