I can list a bajillion books for this (I’m exaggerating, okay?), but let’s go with Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. If you follow me on Goodreads, you know that I ranted about the predictability and common-ness of this one. It just wasn’t for me, even if a lot of the people I know absolutely loved it.
Popular Book or Series that Everyone Hates But You Love
I can’t think of a popular book I loved that everyone else hated, but I’m shocked with all the negative reviews A History of Glitter and Blood has been getting so far… I loved it!
Love Triangle Where the MC Ended Up with the Person You Didn’t Want them to End Up With
THERE ARE A HANDFUL. The first one that popped into my head was the Shatter Me love triangle, but I don’t even want to think about that anymore, so let’s go with the one from Jenny Han’s Summer series. I shipped Belly and the Other Guy, so when I found out she ended up with the Guy I Don’t Like, I skipped the second and third books.

Funnily enough, despite the hype around Red Queen, most reviews I remember weren’t too excited over this one. So perhaps not THAT unpopular XD I was also not into Four’s character as far as the movie goes — I’m just not the type of person who can accept teacher/student relationships. Hmm, maybe I should watch TFIOS — I’m not a romance/contemporary type but my friends and I are getting together over the summer for movies and such.

I am so with you on Four from Divergent, for some reason I didn’t like him as much as I liked Uriah haha… My little brother like IDOLIZES Four, he wants to be him for Halloween :) I have yet to finish Red Queen but I don’t like it so far… I started the audio book and for some reason I like it a whole lot better, it might have something to do with the narrator’s sassy voice hahah XD

I still haven’t read Red Queen yet so we will see on that. I loved TFIOS book but I agree the movie was also excellent. I do have to say I loved Four and Theo James. I agree stereotypes suck. I love this tag!

I do love Four (and Theo James), I agree with you on John Green though, but that’s also because I’m just not much for contemporaries. I do love him as a youtuber though. I haven’t read Red Queen and it sounds interesting, but so many things do, so that doesn’t really mean anything, does it?

I’m a HUGE contemporary fan, but I can’t force myself to like John Green’s books–his writing just isn’t my type.

Ha! We actually agree on so many of these. I am not a fan of John Green and really didn’t care for The Fault in Our Stars. I should probably watch the movie. I wasn’t planning on it, but now that I know how much you liked it even though you are not a fan of the book, I will have to give it a go.

Hm, I think I felt similarly by Red Queen, which is a bit of a shame. My love for Theo James is pretty superficial– I just think he is ridiculously attractive, even though I didn’t think too much of Four. I rarely read adult either. I never finished the Summer series so I’m a little scared now because I think there was a couple I shipped more than another (it’s been a while and I remember very little).
Anyway, it was fun reading about your opinions!

Huh, Red Queen seems to be the end of everyone’s praise! It’s interesting to see someone with a different opinion. :)
And yess!!! I also want to read everything! Whenever people ask me what book/book series I don’t ever want to read, I don’t have an answer other than 50 Shades of Grey. (But who knows, maybe someday I will become very gullible when a friend says I should read it, and I will!)
Also, the innocent virgin and the ‘slutty’ best friend stereotypes are definitely annoying! Totally over-used.
I rarely read adult books either, I usually just tend to stick with YA books, and occasionally NA books. XD

It’s nice that the book is getting a lot of praise–good for the author!–but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
I TRIED 50 SHADES. DNFed the first book halfway through, haha. :)
I’ve only read a few adult, and it’s definitely my goal to read more! I’m mostly a YA reader and occasional NA/MG reader. :)

I didn’t like it, but personally I thought it was 100x better than the book since you can’t hear Ana talking about her “Inner Goddess”, lol!

I feel you when it comes to Red Queen, I was expecting something mind-blowing but it was…not. And the Shatter Me love triangle lmao do you mean “Let us forget that this boy once psychologically tortured you into killing someone because he has a Shakespeare quote tattooed near his d*** and that is hot for some reason?”. Yeah, I’m still bitter about all that and Adam’s 180 degree flip flop into the slop. And that slutshaming trope is just sad and meant to make the protagonist somehow look more angelic and unique.

EXACTLY! Jesus, one of the most annoying love triangles ever, that one. :/ I liked Adam in book 1 and I didn’t get far enough into book 2 to see the new side of him, but I’ve heard its shit.

I so agree with you about Red Queen. I actually marked it as a DNF just because it was so typical. It felt like I was reading the same recycled storyline, characters and romance for like the billionth time. Lol a History of Glitter and Blood ;p HAHAH. I think I actually would have liked it if I you know…received the entire book lmao. BUT OH MY GOD YES THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY SERIES. So mad. I definitely wanted Belly to end up with the other brother. Their relationship just seemed so much more healthy to me??

I totally can relate about wanting to read everything. It’s good not to limit oneself. And strangely, even for a book I didn’t like I’ll continue the series just to confirm that it’s not good. Also, I’m too curious. Like what if the books improve and I miss out on good series? However, I’m against reading erotica. I don’t think I’ll ever feel compelled to explore that genre. But I hope to read more adult books one day as well! :)
And Red Queen. There have been so many mixed reactions towards that book. So I’m not sure if I plan to read that anytime soon.

I agree! Although with series, if I didn’t like the first I’d actually opt out of the sequels because I want to spend my time on other books instead. :) I’m actually okay with reading erotica as long as the book has a plot other than just pure sex.
If you’re a fan of some of the more popular YA dystopians this day, then I say maybe try it out. :)

I can see why you didn’t like Red Queen–it has a lot of elements that are very similar to other novels in its genre which can make it seem repetitive or a knock off. I really liked it though :P Good on ya for predicting all the stuff that happened because I sure was blindsided and normally I’m pretty good at predicting the ending early on haha
Oh and that TROPE! The worst! And if often accompanies a sequel novel with said BFF…at least in romance genres.

UGH, Four got so whiny in Allegiant (which is pretty much my least favourite book ever). And I didn’t like Red Queen either. You’re definitely not alone with these :)

I’m one of those people that hardly reads the big, popular series – at least these days. And I’ve never read anything by Colleen Hoover so I can’t say what I think. I do really like John Green though. ;) And…never read any of the Divergent books or seen the films. Not interested.

I thought they would be for me based on the story, and I was right. It was just his writing that I couldn’t get into. I feel like I’m behind on reading, too!

I read about three paragraphs of Red Queen and NOPED so hard. The writing style didn’t mesh with me at all!
And while I liked Alaska and TFIOS, I won’t be reading any more John Green. Probably not rereading either…

The fact that you liked A History of Glitter and Blood gives me hope. So that’s good. The Red Queen thing scares me, but you are not the only one I have heard that from, sadly. And I have to agree with Four for a few reasons: 1. The stupid Four Novellas actually made me DISlike him. and 2. Theo James is old. MY age old. So… it’s gross. I mean, being in your 30s isn’t gross, but if you’re 30 and in a relationship with a teenager… yeah no. And I am sorry, he LOOKS 30. He’s not like, one of those guys who can pass for 21. I digress, rant over ;)

Whoa, that’s the first I’ve heard (RE: Four novellas) and I’m so glad I never read them! And I agree! There’s nothing wrong with being 30 at all, but 30 + teen = uncomfortable Aimee.

When I was reading Red Queen, I was like, “Okay… looks like I’ll be giving 2 stars to another hyped-up book,” so I can totally see where you’re coming from. I guess that twist at the end totally caught me by surprise (I’ve never been good at predicting things, anyway :P), and I was so mindblown that I ended up enjoying it!
Tbh, the fact that the book has a love triangle already turns me off a little, so I end up not shipping the protagonist with either love interest, lmao. I know, I’m so extreme when it comes to romance. But I can think of one book where the MC ended up with someone I really disliked — The Diviners by Libba Bray. Everyone raved about how hot and sweet he was, but I found him boring and so, so stereotypical (for a love interest) and desperately wished she’d end up with the other guy. So the final chapter where the MC and the guy who won were lying together made me puke in my mouth a little. Haha.
YES, I really want to read more adult books too! Unfortunately I have a really short attention span, and a lot of the adult books I’ve tried getting into were just too… long-winded for my taste? But lol, look at who’s talking. I’m like the queen of long-windedness with my supremely long comments. I don’t know how anyone can read through them either. >< And NO WAY, you didn't like Four? I can't say much about Theo James since I've only seen him in Divergent, but I was one of those fangirls who adored Four's character and the romance he had with Tris, hehehe.
Ugh, gotta admit, those "innocent virgin" main characters do piss me off quite a bit. No one is that innocent anymore, c'mon. (Or am I just being ignorant with my overly dirty mind? I apologize for the bad influence I'm spreading all around. O_O) And gah, I still need to watch TFiOS! The book was only okay in my opinion, so I'm looking forward to seeing its true magic onscreen.

I didn’t like Red Queen either! I’m one of those that felt it was too close to Red Rising and The Selection. I just wasn’t a fan. I started History of Glitter and Blood and it’s very strange so far but I’m liking it. I’m not far enough to really know. So glad you loved it. I’ve not seen any reviews yet but now I’m all curious to look at GR. I’ll try to resist.

LOVED reading your answers here Aimee^^ I have yet to read John Green or Colleen Hoover myself – but then again that’s not surprising since I so rarely read contemporaries. I’m pretty ‘meh’ on Four/Theo James too, so I’ll hide with you from the fangirls O.O haha! I also hate stereotypes, give me something new and fresh already! I’m planning to read The Shatter Me Trilogy, and I’m scared of what’s going to happen :( But other than that I feel like I haven’t read many love triangles where the MC ends up with someone different. SO HMMM.

AH, yes. I am not a fan of sterotypes either. I wish we could move on and not have books where there is slut shaming that never gets picked up on- sure, if the book deals with someone being branded or whatever it may be, but if it’s just because a character thinks this girl is a “slut” and that’s that… NO. No no no. It’s just really, really frustrating and horrible.
Divergent as a whole was a good read for me but I really disliked Insurgent and didn’t read the last book, but I don’t think I was all for Tris and Four. I liked their companionship, I think, more than their romance. As feisty friends I would have enjoyed them more.

I agree with your John Green opinion, I think he is way too over hyped. As for the Summer I Turned Pretty theres a reason she doesn’t end up with the guy you shipped her with, I actually shipped them too but stuff happened and I was content with her ending up with the other one

I wouldn’t say overhyped–he has his own fans who like him for different reasons. :) Personally I’m just not a fan. Yeah, my best friend mentioned that, and it sounds HORRID. Aka another reason why I don’t want to read the other books. I don’t want my opinion on Guy to change. :)

Yes!!! I hated Red Queen and did not get what all the fuss was about. That book just did not work for me at all.
I don’t like Theo James either, although I did like Four (at least in book one!).
I liked who Belly ended up with…. ooops! But it makes much more sense if you read on because in book two the guy you like becomes guy who is a giant dick and seriously fucks up! Which made it much easier for me to root for her with the other guy.
I have only read 99 Days but I did not like it at all. I can’t wait to review that one, it’s going to be very ranty!
