Before:
Kelsey and David became best friends the summer before freshman year and were inseparable ever after. Until the night a misunderstanding turned Kelsey into the school joke, and everything around her crumbled—including her friendship with David. So when Kelsey’s parents decided to move away, she couldn’t wait to start over and leave the past behind. Except, David wasn’t ready to let her go…

After:
Now it’s senior year and Kelsey has a new group of friends, genuine popularity, and a hot boyfriend. Her life is perfect. That is, until David’s family moves to town and he shakes up everything. Soon old feelings bubble to the surface and threaten to destroy Kelsey’s second chance at happiness. The more time she spends with David, the more she realizes she never truly let him go. And maybe she never wants to.

Review

*Possible spoilers, although I wouldn’t call them full-blown spoilers just because of the sheer predictability of this book on its own.

My initial thought after reading the book was simply oh, how nice, but after much self-deliberation and intense thinking, I’ve come to the conclusion that this book was absolutely frustrating.

You don’t understand how much I wanted to hit Kelsey across the head. To say the least, I’d describe her as a slut-shaming snooty brat. That may sound harsh, but unfortunately, it’s the truth. She even went as far as to call her ex-best friend a slut. She also seemed to think that the world revolved around her, and that no one else’s opinions matted if they weren’t related to her.

The romance was not-so-great, either. There wasn’t anything particularly remarkable about it, and it was just your typical I’ve loved you for ages! type of romance with a shitload of angst thrown in for good measure. There weren’t really any twists that would wow you–this was just your typical dramatic contemporary romance.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this book has a love triangle. Yes, it’s one of those cases where the main character actually has a perfectly nice boyfriend but is clearly obsessing over someone else. And then boyfriend eventually fucks up and girl chooses the guy she’s pining for. Again, nothing new here.

The only saving grace of this book was the writing style. I found this book so easy to get into and so easy to read. I just kept flipping and flipping pages–Ciocca’s words just flow so cleanly. (Although dialogue between characters was sometimes cheesy.)

So I wouldn’t really recommend this book to anyone, unless you’re a hardcore contemporary romance fan. If you’re okay with an endless amount of tropes and cliches, then go ahead and pick this book up.

  1. Yess I want to smack Kelsey in the head too! She’s annoying and always made a big deal of something little. Also, the romance is pretty disappointing for me. Not because the love triangle, but I just don’t see a chemistry between them. I like their friendship, though.

    Anyway, great review Aimee! :)

    1. If you’re not a huge fan of the genre, I wouldn’t really recommend this to you. >_< Let me know what you think if you do try it out, though!

  2. Dammit! I was so excited about this one Aimee, and now I’m bummed. But in a good way if that makes sense, because now I know this book is absolutely not for me. Contemporary YA isn’t my go-to genre anyway but I sometimes like to pick them up, but I fear all the over the top teen drama that sometimes comes with them, so I’m glad to know this is that type of read now before I started it:)

    1. If contemporary YA isn’t a favorite genre of yours, then I am on board with your decision not to push through with this. It’s a LOAD of teen drama and angst. ._.

  3. oh no! I’m sorry to see you didn’t enjoy this one. I’m reading it now, and so far i’m liking it. Though I can totally see where you’re coming from, especially the slut-shaming parts. Hope your next read is better for you! :)

    1. I totally get why you’re liking it though–the writing was fantastic. Everything else, unfortunately, I had problems with. >_< Thanks, Lisa!

  4. I read spoilers for this book, and yeah, totally NOT for me haha. That type of love triangle is my worst nightmare! Good on you for sticking through. At least you liked the writing style.

  5. Yikes, slut shaming. And with her ex-best friend D: Aaaand your typical love triangle. Honestly, I’ve had so many negative experiences with them that I’ve pretty much taken to steering clear of them now. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the book; I don’t think I would’ve, either. Great review, though, and I hope your next read turns out better!

    1. Ha! I definitely felt the connection, but it was mostly for the writing and not the actual romance itself… I don’t think I made any sense! Anyway, yes, the slut-shaming was absolutely ridiculous.

  6. Gah, this is why I avoid so many contemporary romances. The same tired tropes all over again. Doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy, with the holy trinity of slut-shaming, love triangle and melodrama. I enjoyed your review though!

  7. EEK. I’m not the biggest fan of contemporary romances on a good day, and this one just sounds like a huge NO.

Why is there still slut shaming in books? Like seriously. No one likes it. Everyone wants it gone. So it’s still being written … WHY? Ugh. -_-

And it also REALLY ANNOYS ME when girls have perfectly fine boyfriends and want someone else. Are they bored? Stupid?

Yep, staying FAR AWAY from this one.

Thanks for he review, lovely <3

    1. I’m okay with slut-shaming IF the MC actually changes and grows a more mature brain by the end of the book. :/
      RIGHT?! What the fuck.
      Thanks, Chiara!

  8. Ew. I honestly don’t think this book is for me at ALL. It would likely make me go all Larissa rage hardcore though, so perhaps that’d be funny [;

Slut shaming is the actual worst. It’s pure girl hate and there’s no way around that. I especially hate in YA when the MC is portrayed as some virgin purity perfect princess. And then you have the sexual bff which is constantly subjected to slut shaming!1!!! It’s like??? Are you seriously judging your bff and almost like using her as a tool to inflate your own ego??? The fuck. It’s even worse when the slut shaming continues throughout the entirety of the novel. Really goes to show how problematic the whole thing is. I would definitely want to strangle the MC in this one a lot from the sounds of her “wonderful” personality.

Cliche as fuck too? Woop. I honestly think a lot of contemporaries do tend to follow a “recipe” style format that just involves all of the tropes in history. It’s kinda sad tbh when I get to read a contemporary and some of these tropes are missing so I get excited :p

Lovely review Aimee <33 Think I'll be steering clear of Last Year's Mistake (…it'd be a mistake to read it. LOL. pretend I'm funny okay [; )

    1. I KNOOOOOW. What the crap! I have tons of flirty friends and definitely no judging on my part. :/ I guess authors just want to make the MCs look 1000x more “innocent.”
Yep! The ones that follow a formula annoy the fuck out of me.
HA–no need to pretend. You are the best. ;)

  9. Ohh shoot. Not the love triangle of convenience. I liked it in Perfect Chemistry but I don’t ever want to see it again. I’m not sure if this one is for me tbh. I haven’t been in the contemporary mood as of late and this doesn’t seem to pose a solution for that. Thanks for your review!

    1. Yep, sigh. The MC had a boyfriend in Perfect Chemistry? I don’t remember anymore, haha. There are definitely other more amazing contemporaries out there!
