When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.

Review

*Possible minor spoilers in there…*

Let it be known that the men who don’t want to get attached trope has never worked for me before. Call me shallow, but I thought that since this book was going to be turned into a movie, that it would just have that special umph! that this trope so desperately needs.

And now that I’ve finished the book, I can hear the book gods laughing at me, pointing fingers and snorting. Thanks for the warning, y’all.

The synopsis actually leads you to think that this book will have a slow-burn romance. Well, fuck you, synopsis. Tate becomes creepily obsessed with Miles almost immediately, and I just wanted to rip her eyeballs out of her face. How can this not creep you out:

If I had a superpower, it would be infiltration. I would infiltrate his mind so I could see every single one of his thoughts.

I would infiltrate his heart and spread myself around like a virus.

I would call myself the Infiltrator.

Other than her pro creep status, Tate also deserves the award of being deemed a doormat. One of those fluffy ones that you just want to step on. At first, we’re told (yes, told. Not shown) that Tate is a headstrong and passionate girl who is putting her career in front of romantic relationships. Well clearly, that was before she met “V” Miles. And then Creeper Tate was born.

I have no idea what Tate sees in Miles. He’s not manipulative and is quite honest actually, but that’s where his list of redeemable qualities ends. Because as a whole, Miles is a fucking asshole. A very unrealistic asshole who is just as creepy as Tate. Behold, Miles’ creepiness:

Rachel.
You’re gonna fall in love with me, Rachel.

{…}
She’s gonna have all my babies.

By the way, Rachel is Miles’ ex. Miles’ chapters were so incredibly hard to get into. They’re written in a pseudopoetic manner that was probably meant to show us how broken Miles was. It honestly felt like regular prose, but with bold letters, centered paragraphs and cut sentences. With stalker-y thoughts.

Now that I’ve expressed how much I hated these two individually, let’s talk about how even worse they were together. Their relationship was destructive, misleading and disrespectful. I am not okay with the way Tate just let Miles step all over her heart repeatedly. Like that time when he said another girl’s name when they were having sex, and Tate just let him keep going. WHAT THE FUCK? /ninja flips book/

Overall, I’d recommend this only to fans of other popular new adult titles. Otherwise, stay the fuck away.

  1. Ugly Love has always been a mystery to me. It feels like I’m the only one who doesn’t know the secrets to this book #weird. Also, I was actually excited to read your review when I saw it on my dash. My mind was like, “Is this going to be a rare five-star rating or a sassy rant-filled one?” LOL.

    1. HAHA. Those seem to be the only two possible ratings for any CoHo book! xD You should definitely read it if your curious of the “secrets” though. :)

  2. Dude, I TOTALLY agree with you 105%. The whole time I was reading this book I was like, “Wait, people actually LIKE this plot? People actually LIKE these characters?” >_> Totally disappointing.

  3. THIS IS WHY I DON’T READ NA.

I cannot deal with these types of guys. Why would anyone be attracted to someone who’ll only hurt them???

Tate sounds like an idiot and tbh, like a lot of the girls in NA. Miles sounds boring and in the trailer, 50 Shades of Grey-esque.
    I”M GONNA PASS

    1. I read NA because I’ve found a handful of gems (KB Ritchie and Julie Cross are goddesses) and would love to find more.
      RIGHT? DEAR BOOK GODS, WHY!?
Oh yes! The trailer was so odd and incredibly creepy. :/

  4. Haha, I totally get what you mean. However, this book stuck with me for a long time. I thought the twist was predictable (his whole background story thing) but I really shipped Miles and Rachel for some reason. I wouldn’t have minded a whole novel just about them. Tate is an insanely stupid character and yeah I full on agree that Miles is a stalkerish, creepy asshole. This is hands down the best NA book I’ve ever read but for me this is probably around the C- area in terms of rating.. I just don’t like NA at all. I see why people obsess about this though.

    1. I didn’t really get the development between Miles and Rachel either, but at least you found something to love about this book!
What? You should remedy that! Try Addicted to You by Krista and Becca Ritchie, or Whatever Life Throws at You by Julie Cross. Those are my favorite NAs, and I’d consider them around the A- area! <3

  5. Ha. I’ve seen a lot of love for Colleen Hoover’s books, but it seems to me they fall into the same old tired NA stereotypes. I have yet to read this one – I’ll either save myself the pain, or put myself through it due to my morbid curiosity.

  6. HAHA. I COMPLETELY see where you’re coming from with this. While I did like this — and this was the first Colleen Hoover book that I read — you’ve brought up some very valid points here. I think, if I’m being honest, that NA is the sort of category that people either like or don’t like much at all.

Let’s hope your need read is MUCH better ;)

  7. Awww I’m sorry you didn’t like this one, but I loved it! I will agree, Miles was a bit weird with his relationship with Rachel, and Tate was a bit obsessed, but I think that’s what made their relationship so unhealthy and destructive. It was definitely an Ugly Love which I believe Colleen was going for. New Adult is my favorite genre so maybe I’m bias with my opinions on it, but I can relate more to NA now than YA :(. Hopefully she’ll write something that you can enjoy. I know it must suck that every time you read her work, it’s always a 2 star or below read!

    1. I’m glad you loved it yourself, Tika! The thing about Ugly Love for me was that I felt the “ugly” part, but not the “love.” Haha. I really hope I enjoy at least one of her books! :)

  8. I’ve yet to read a Colleen Hoover book but I know that I’m not going to start with this one. I’ve read both positive and negative reviews of this book but I know Im going to hate it because I know myself and want I want of my characters. I’m not a fan of doormat females who allow the men they love/lust to walk all over them for one thing. And she let’s him go on even though he was clearly using her as a replacement for someone else? Fuck this noise. I’m going to read Hoover someday, just never this one. Great review Aimee!

    1. This is definitely not Colleen’s best, even based off her fans’ reactions. :( People have said Slammed/Maybe Someday’s her best, so maybe start with those! Personally I read MS and didn’t like it either. :(

  9. I’m sorry this one didn’t work for you, Aimee! I liked it in parts, made my heart feel heavy at one point, but all of the things you’ve pointed out was really bothersome to me as well. Especially when he said some other girls name while they had sex, ugh that was disgusting and made me rage.

Hopeless, Slammed and recently Confess (*ugly sobs*) were the best of Colleen’s work. (And Never Never). Someday Maybe made me all rage-y (DNF) haha, and this one just did not hit all the marks. I’m still intrigued by the movie and hopefully Nick Bateman will pull off a less weird/asshole-ry Miles, and basically change a lot of the creepy vibes in the whole movie too. *crosses fingers*

    1. It WAS. And Tate’s reaction was an extra dose of disgusting. :(
I haven’t read any of those three, actually! I plan to read Slammed and Confessed, although a close friend told me that Hopeless won’t be my thing. I didn’t like Maybe Someday either! I hope Nick doesn’t turn out like Christian in the 50 Shades movie, haha!

  10. I am a big Colleen Hoover fan but I can see your points. I will say this was one of my least favorite of hers. The characters were not as relatable (or likable) as they were in other books for me. The review was quite entertaining though!

  11. Hooray for snarky Aimee!

I had the exact same issues with this one too. I was such a fan of her Slammed and Hopeless series’, but these new adult titles are horrid really. There’s none of that special something that she used to put into her characters, and they’ve become just more typical new adult that’s flooding the market for a quick buck sadly. I hated them both to be honest, neither character called to me, only Miles being the lesser of two evils really. Tate is a few fries short of a happy meal and I can’t stand that shy virgin type that BAM, enters a sexual relationship. I was so disappointing by this one too Aimz. I’ve got to plans to read any other NA title she releases either. After the last two, I’m done.

Brilliantly funny review, absolutely loved it! <3

    1. LOL. ;)
I haven’t read her older titles yet (Slammed & Hopeless) and I do plan to. Someday. I don’t think Tate was a virgin. She just hadn’t had sex in a while, if I remember correctly.
      Thanks Kelly! <3

  12. I really liked this book (totally shed some tears) but I can definitely see why you didn’t like it. I wouldn’t say it is CoHo’s best work by a long shot–and I also think my original rating is inflated from a Colleen Hoover readathon haha

Tate’s character development was non-existent to me so I didn’t particularly like her. However, I really liked Mile’s backstory–that was my favourite part of the book. He really wasn’t a “winner” in the present day but I liked reading about him interacting with Rachel in the past. I personally didn’t label him as stalker-y in his thoughts–I just chalked it up to stereotypical teen male POV as per a female’s mind–so I didn’t put too much thought into it.

I totally agree with your final conclusion: major fans of New Adult will love this but if you are new to the genre (or Colleen Hoover’s work) this probably isn’t the best one to start with ;)

    1. Haha! I’m glad to hear you’re a Colleen Hoover fan! (Personally I’m not, but well!)
I’m close to guys in real life, and I honestly doubt they think this way. My guy friends are actually really adorable when they have crushes!
      Thank you! :D

      Like

      1. Oh, I agree that guys (at least the ones I know) don’t think like this. I think sometimes female authors take male stereotypes to an extreme when they write in a male’s POV so you end up getting uber alpha males (that often have stalkerish and creepy thoughts) in their works.

  13. Awww, sorry you didn’t like this. I actually did like it. I’m a huge CoHo fan. BUT I can honestly see where you’re coming from and I can’t disagree with you because you’re totally right with your points. I think her books are either love or hate. Sorry this was a hate for you. :(

  16. This is 100% me. I wanted to vomit the entire time. Like WTF IS WRONG WITH HER WHY WOULD SHE JUST LET HIM CONTINUE. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY /WHY IS HE SUCH AN ASSHOLE./ This was personally my first and my last CoHo book.

  17. I liked the first 3 books by Colleen Hoover and then I read Maybe Someday and I just couldn’t go back. I read the description to Ugly Love and Tate sounded like another version of the “heroine” in Maybe Someday, and for most of that book I just wanted to slap some sense into her. She had no self-respect, a doormat like Tate here. And the guy was a complete asshole just like Miles here. When I heard his prior girlfriend figured heavily into the plot that was it for me. How can you have a romance without it coming off as second choice or divided in someway when the guy is still hung up in some way with the last girl?

Btw, the movie preview seems more like 50 Shades than a New Adult story. Sorry this didn’t work out for you. I still have no desire to read this at all. Great honest review! :)

    Like

    1. I really didn’t like Maybe Someday, either. :( Tate was a lot like the heroine on there, actually. And Ridge–NO. I can’t bring myself to like that kind of guy.
It does have a huge 50 Shades feel! :(

  18. Truthfully, I haven’t really loved this book as well. The romance was icky because it was definitely more lust (I love CoHo but this isn’t that swoon worthy as her other books) that love. But what did it for me was Miles’ history haha you do know I’m a sucker for tear jerker books, and I cried like a baby at that time! hahaha

    1. Yes, this was definitely more on the lust/obsession side of things. Really? Miles’ history just made me want to throw his head against bricks haha! No judging though. :)

  19. oh my! I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Collen Hoover’s books. I mostly don’t like them except for Maybe Someday, which is amazing and doesn’t follow any NA trope. I’ve had this book for a while but haven’t felt the need to read it, almost everyone I know didn’t like it. I heard that they were turning it into a movie do I thought I would give it another chance but I don’t think I’m going to it sounds so terrible. I hate stupid characters and mean male protagonist. Great Review, thanks for the warning!

  20. I actually really liked this book, the insta love pissed me off as well – I didn’t feel the romance between Rachel and Miles plus the prose writing was just indents instead of being lyrical. Although, I thought it was kind of a touching book because of Miles actually. I thought he was mainly a good guy. It does give fifty shades of grey vibes especially that trailer, I hope the movie doesn’t ruin it though! Love the honesty :)

p.s I sorta cried when he said Rachel’s name when Tate and him were doing it, poor Tate.

    1. I get what you mean though! (Okay yeah, I still really hate Miles with a burning passion.)
Poor Tate indeed! No girl deserves to be treated that way. :(

  21. Awww Aimee! Such a shame you weren’t a fan of this one! I did think that they got attached to each other a bit too quickly, although it was interesting seeing old and new Miles and the difference between them. Poor Tate did get taken advantage of, but I’m glad it kind of worked out.

    1. I’m personally not to glad that everything worked out, haha. With the way the first 90% of the book happened, I was hoping for a non-HEA, actually.

  22. When this book came out, I wasn’t really interested in it. The only reason why I own a paperback is because I got it in a giveaway. Then I saw the movie teaser and it left me wanting to read it, now I’m not sure if I want to read it. Lol you just knocked this to the bottom of my TBR again. I usually love all new adult books so maybe I might like it more. But I’m kind of wary now because I’m not a fan of instant love. Thanks for the review though :)

    1. Haha, the movie trailer is actually turning me off, lol. If you’re a fan of new adult, you’ll definitely enjoy it more than I did!

  23. I really enjoyed this book, but can absolutely see where you’re coming from. I actually don’t take feel bad for Tate whatsoever, I mean a little bit because she’s a girl and I can feel her pain in ways, but she let him use her as a doormat. I mean he clearly did state what he wanted out of the relationship and she just let it continue.

Though, I’m not sticking up for Miles because what he did was shitty. I just really enjoyed how the relationship grew, even though it did take more than 3/4 of the book to do that. I was mostly involved with the side characters and their stories are what added so much to the book for me.

But, I agree, if you like NA you’ll probably really enjoy this, if not then steer away.

    Great review! :)

    1. I didn’t like the way she just LET him do that as well, especially when it was obvious early on that she was really liking him already.
If we’re talking about side characters, Cap really got my attention in that department. :)
      Thanks, Erica!
