Quinlan McKee is a closer. Since the age of seven, Quinn has held the responsibility of providing closure to grieving families with a special skill—she can “become” anyone.

Recommended by grief counselors, Quinn is hired by families to take on the short-term role of a deceased loved one between the ages of fifteen and twenty. She’s not an exact copy, of course, but she wears their clothes and changes her hair, studies them through pictures and videos, and soon, Quinn can act like them, smell like them, and be them for all intents and purposes. But to do her job successfully, she can’t get attached.

Now seventeen, Quinn is deft at recreating herself, sometimes confusing her own past with those of the people she’s portrayed. When she’s given her longest assignment, playing the role of Catalina Barnes, Quinn begins to bond with the deceased girl’s boyfriend. But that’s only the beginning of the complications, especially when Quinn finds out the truth about Catalina’s death. And the epidemic it could start.

REVIEW

“Grief can be contagious.”

If you’re looking for an emotionally-scarring, mind-jarring dystopian read, The Remedy is the book for you! With its intriguing plot, honest characters and heart-wrenching romance, surely you’re going to want to read this.

Admittedly, there wasn’t much going on in this novel as a whole. I believe that it’s more of a build up for the sequel, The Epidemic. That being said, this book read more like a realistic fiction novel rather than a dystopian most of the time. But that’s okay, since we all love realistic fiction.

But believe me, this story was not entirely useless. The crazy plot made up for the lack of action. See, Quinn is a closer. She poses as a dead person so that their loved ones can experience another day with them, to say sorry and whatever else they want to say. Creepy, right?

There’s also some pretty awesome characterization here. Quinn is always conflicted and confused as hell–but shw wasn’t always this way. Something’s changing. *cue eerie music* Quinn’s emotions are all over the place, and we totally feel what she feels. She feels want, need, desperation, love, jealousy, anger–and we feel all these things alongside her.

The romance in this book will make you go crazy. It’s kind of a love triangle, but not really. No spoilers. There’s Deacon, Quinn’s ex who’s kind of moody like her. They have history, and they have chemistry. I love how he’s the kind of guy who can never tell the girl no. On the other hand, we have Isaac, Quinn’s assignment’s boyfriend. He’s sweet, but he’s broken and grieving.

I also loved the amazing family in here. Quinn got really close to her assignment’s family. She wasn’t related to them at all, but they loved her and she cared about them. Even when people shunned her, they adored her and were infinitely thankful for her help.

Also, let’s not forget the fucking crazy cliffhanger at the end of the book. I swear, you won’t see it coming. Actually, there are *two* insane revelations in the end, and they will knock your socks off. So remove any socks you have before reading.

    1. I actually loved both The Program and The Treatment. But it definitely makes sense to wait for The Epidemic to come out first, because the cliffhanger in this one was crazy!

  1. I’ve been meaning to start this series in ages. I am picky on my dystopias but you got me sold on “If you’re looking for an emotionally-scarring, mind-jarring dystopian read”. I think I will get these ASAP when I’m in the mood for a dystopia. Great review, Aimee! :)

  2. I’ve been meaning to read this one but because i read it was like a prequel to THE PROGRAM i decided to not read it. I loved the series so much i was afraid this one would just ruin my impression of the series to me. BUT I AM SO HAPPY I WAS BEYOND WRONG! haha! I’m definitely picking this one up Aimee!

  3. I was sold immediately after reading your first line Aimee, you know me and my fascination with emotionally overwhelming books, also I also find myself drawn to ones that end in major cliffies I know what is wrong with me? Although I’ve only read one book previously by Young, I think this book will definitely be my sort of thing! Fabulous review as always! :)

    1. Emotional rollercoasters are so my thing, too. ;) I hate cliffhangers, but they do what they’re made for: get you excited for the sequel! Thank you, Jasprit. :D

  4. EEP YAY! I’m so glad you liked this book, Aimee :D I really liked it, too, for pretty much the reasons you did. I loved Quinn’s emotional wreck-ness and her relationship with Deacon. I also loved the fact that not a lot happens in this book. I love books that focus more on the characters than the plot, and THE REMEDY was definitely one of those books.

Oh my LORD the cliffhanger like what even. I didn’t know there was a sequel when I finished so I was just raging and shell shocked but then I realised there was. THANK THE LORD because I need answers, and I need them NOW.

    Lovely review <3

    1. Characters who are crazy emotionally and/or mentally are the best in my book! ;) And Deacon was such a doll–looooved him. <3
The cliffhanger was INSANE. Totally regret reading this book this early, huh? xD I didn't know about it either! I only found out when I saw another reader ask Suzanne on Twitter. ;)

  5. Glad you enjoyed this! I’ve been seeing a lot of reviews of this one lately, together with The Program. And I’m starting to wonder if it’s a really good book to read (?) I’m surprised to see it played realistic fiction more than historical, but like you said, THAT’S OKAY. I still want to read this sometime. Thanks for the review! Very convincing :D

    1. I actually think that both this book and The Program are books that you’re either going to love or hate. If you like angst and drama, then you’ll definitely find yourself enjoying this, but if not, I think it’ll be best to stay away. Thank you, Jillian! :)

    1. Ha! No issue–the original books did come out first, and you can read them as separate series if you like. :) Loved The Program, and I hope you enjoy!

  6. Aww you’re so lucky to have read this one already ! I absolutely loved The Program. I wasn’t sure, at first, about reading this one, though: lots and lots of stories on the side of the, main story, if I can say, bother me a bit. (I don’t know if I’m making sense? I mean, lots and lots of prequels, books 0.5, 1.5, I just think that’s a lot, and it tends to discourage me, sometimes.) BUT the Program was so good, and reading your review just makes The Remedy a must-read, definitely. Thank you for sharing! :D
(and sorry for the long comment, wow, ahah! :) )

    1. This one doesn’t read like a prequel at all, and honestly I think it should have its own series name. It stands out, and it’s long enough to be part of its own series. And this book is hardly related to The Program. ;)
No worries! I love long comments. ;D

  7. I’ve heard really varied things about this series, from it being more contemporary to dystopian and being more about the romance than everything. This one sounds like it has some awesome revelations and really took you on a journey too with the moody characters. Wonderful review Aimee!

  8. That cliff-hanger sure was INSANE. I’m so glad there’s a sequel. I would have died curious otherwise LOL You’re so right! I loved that the plot made up for the lack of action! Fantastic review, Aimee x

  9. That’s kind of why I wanted to hold off on reading this. I still haven’t read The Program and I kind of wanted to start on that first. But it just sounds like I should prepare myself for a heartbreak. This is an awesome review Aimee :)
