Come discuss with us!

Obviously, you guys know that I love discovering new blogs, leaving comments and commenting back to the lovelies who leave their thoughts on my posts.

Why the heck do I do that, anyway?!

Well the main reason is: acknowledgement. I want bloggers to know that their posts are being read and that their opinions matter. Comments are solid proof of this, yeah? I mean, sure, check out your stats and how many people view your posts, but maybe they just took a peek and didn’t read the entire thing?

I just love letting you guys know that at least I read your post and that I acknowledge the minutes or possibly hours you spent coming up with the perfect post or review.

Even if I’m just a single blimp in the bookish community, I want to show you that I love you guys.

*I’m definitely not bashing the non-commenters. If I have a legit reason for commenting, they also have their legit reasons for not commenting.*

  1. This is so fantastic! I try my best to comment back on people’s blogs — for exactly the reasons you’ve outlined above. I mean, people put so much effort into their blogs, and they definitely deserve to have their hard work acknowledged. (In saying that — sometimes I don’t comment on EVERY post I read. I personally don’t feel that there is a point if I don’t have much to say, you know?) I also think it’s important to reply to people’s comments, too, so they know they’re being heard. (Which I sometimes get horribly behind in doing so. ;)) Great post!

  2. I love discovering and commenting on blogs, too! Although, if I have nothing to say, I won’t comment. I used to be bad at this but I’ve gotten a lot better.

  3. I LOVE COMMENTS AIMEE! Like you said, they’re perfect little notes letting me know someone read what I have to say. Obviously, I know more people are reading the post than just those who choose to comment, but I like feeling like the blog is a little more interactive and not just me putting an opinion out in the abyss that is the internet. I want people to give theirs in return. Plus, I’ve “met” so many amazing people (like you!!!!) just by commenting on their blogs. Love it:)

  4. I love commenting and I love receiving</em them too! Whenever I read a post I try to comment as it's kind of disheartening to see that your post is being viewed but no one is commenting! <3

  5. I love this post and completely agree on everything you say! I ALWAYS make sure I leave a personal response to every single comment my blog receives because I don’t want people to think they’re “just another comment”. I truly appreciate every response and I love hearing everyones thoughts and opinions on posts or reviews I’ve written because I am genuinely interested in their opinions and at the end of the day – they’re my reads, so they’re important and what they think is important.

I also love commenting on other blog posts – I will admit I have slacked in doing this a bit recently but will definitely pick it up again when I can.

    Fab post! xxx

  6. I do my best to comment back on other people’s blogs for the same reason, Aimee. If they take the time to visit and respond to one of my posts, I should do the same for them. Not only is it respectful, but you never know what you might find when you reciprocate. I’ve found some neat book review, SFF, and writing blogs by commenting back – and several bloggers and I have made a habit of regularly following each other as a result. :) Like I said, you never know what can happen or who might become a new blogger friend!

  7. Whenever I do a comment spree, I feel so happy and almost always tweet about it. Even though I’m not always able to comment back to every single comment I receive or comment on all the posts I read, I try my best to give the love back to those who’ve showed the same to me and also the bloggers I really adore.

  8. I definitely try my best to, especially if there is a post I want to contribute too. I get a bit lazy at times but I try to force past that! I think I’ve been getting better at it recently than before. :P

  9. I try to comment back, but I forget way too often. However, I do scroll through my news feed, and I never read a post without commenting or liking. You’re right, we work hard on our blogs! Everyone deserves some recognition! :-)

  10. I love comments! I try my best to comment for the reason you stated above, but seriously my net connection is crappy, after trying for 5 to 6 times or more, one of my comments gets posted. So sometimes, I get angry and stop but I seriously love it when somebody comments and it would be the same for the other person as well, so I try my best!

  11. I like to comment back too :) and reply to peoples comments on my blog. Not only do I feel like it’s the polite thing to do, but I think that people do enjoy it when they receive comments on their work. It does indeed make them feel acknowledged in my opinion ^^!

  12. I love commenting because it lets me connect to the blogging world! But sometimes I feel overwhelmed with commenting because I’m still in school. When I’m on break though I definitely comment more.

  13. I so appreciate this post! Blog commenting is incredibly time consuming, but I think it’s important too. I think we should show support to our friends/bloggers, and this is one of the best ways to do it. Nothing is worse than writing a post and seeing it get 0 comments. :/ But at the same time, I think you shouldn’t expect comments if you don’t comment yourself… I hope that doesn’t sound RUDE. lol

  14. I comment most of the time. If I don’t it’s because I have nothing to say but if I have the option of liking it (like on WordPress) then I’ll like it so they know that I read it at least! :)

  15. Aw this is nice! I agree, and that is why I try to comment as much as possible. I mean, sure, there ARE times I forget or whatever, being human and all, but I really do make an effort. Because like you said, I DO want to acknowledge that I appreciate their comment, and the time they took to not only leave me thoughtful words, but to read my post in the first place! Plus, it truly is fun to discover other blogs, or read posts that I may have otherwise missed!

  16. Definitely depends on the content of the post. If I see that the person actually read my post and didn’t only want to advertise their blog on mine, 99% of the time I check their blogs out and end up following them. The way someone comments says a lot about them as a blogger! If you only put copy&paste comments on 312793729 blogs to get your name out there, I don’t think there’s going to be quality content or a well-maintained blog waiting for me. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to advertise, in fact I like when people leave their URLs at the end of their comment so I can check their blogs out.

Commenting back is risky business. I comment back when I do find interesting content and usually I do follow them, too then. Commenting just for the comments sake if I don’t even like the blog or would never read it personally doesn’t make much sense to me. Everybody has to decide for themselves I guess.

  17. Commenting back is the juice that fuels any bloggers – old and new. I don’t know about you, but any of my posts that receive zero comments makes me a sad puppy.

  18. I actually love commenting back! I admit at first it was a hassle (because I wasn’t used to it) but after a while, you get that itch to go to blogs and comment and give them some love! <3 I'm actually searching for new blogs to stalk hahaha

  19. I like leaving comments! Comments make any bloggers happy, really ^^ And it’s also a nice way to express my opinions. It’s sad that I haven’t been active recently! Sometimes I get too tired with school work to even type anything so I don’t comment even though I read the post. :(

  20. Commenting, it’s an amazing thing.

I suppose I comment on other people’s (or try to) posts just because I want that person to feel the way I do when I receive comments. Reading comments can really make your day and I want to be able to do that for others. Acknowledgement is definitely a key component too, it allows the blogger to know that their post not only has an audience, but an audience who cares and was effected by the post enough to comment. Otherwise wouldn’t the blogger feel like they’re talking to themselves?

Commenting is something I definitely value as a blogger because it’s instrumental in interacting with fellow bloggers, who honestly do act like a sort of support system. I’m going to be really honest here and say- would I continue to blog if nobody ever commented on my posts? I don’t think so. I’d definitely feel discouraged and as if my voice in the blogging world is irrelevant/my posts not quality. THIS IS WHY COMMENTING IS SO IMPORTANT.

As for commenting back, it’s essential. Though, I must admit that I suck at it. I know I do, and it’s because I don’t have the time. That’s not exactly true though, because I do have the time to leave short comments, however I don’t think these accurately showcase my feelings on a post so I usually end up not posting them. I want my comments to be a genuine response to an blogger’s hard work and well…look what you got her girl [; another rambling essay by Larissa. ooops.

    Lovely post Aimee <33

  21. Lovely post! Yup, I’m like you. I always try and comment back and visit blogs. I don’t think of it as an obligation which some people do but a nice way to connect with people, it might take me a while to get around to it lol but I’ll always pop up somewhere :)

  22. I love commenting back! I feel so accomplished. I like making the blogger feel like yes, their posts DO matter and what they’re doing IS important. Plus the only way you’ll get to know someone is by building a friendship over commenting/commenting back :)

  23. I try to blog hop and comment as much as I can! It’s my favourite bit, just because I love interacting with the person behind the post, you know? I have opinions and thoughts and I want to share them as well! Plus I know how much a comment can mean and everyone puts so much hard work into their posts!

  24. I love receiving comments and interacting with other bloggers (regardless of their blog topics). I visit a lot of blog niches especially if I have time to spare. Sometimes, although I read their blog post, I don’t leave comments because I have nothing sensible to say.

Are you a commenting back kind of person? Any particular reason why or why not?
    – I try to comment back as much as possible but sometimes, there’s not enough time to do it. Heck, I don’t even have time to blog these days. But when I have time to catch up, I go for blog comment spree!

  25. I used to not even visit other blogs back in the first days of my blog, and honestly, you could hear the cricket chirps from the other side of cyberspace. When I started to interact with the rest of the blogging community, EVERYTHING changed. It felt like I was actually blogging to other people instead of shouting into the void. I mean, if you hadn’t dropped by on my blog, I wouldn’t have found yours and honestly, it’s a beautiful blog and I think I’m following half for the design. (And of course for the wonderful content I’m glimpsing XD XD)

  26. I think it’s important to respond and acknowledge comments on your own posts, but I don’t always comment back on their posts. I always go to the blog and scroll through their homepage, but if I don’t see any posts that interest me, I’ll go onto the next comment. I mean everyone has different interests. Someone might read and comment on something on my blog, but I wouldn’t have an interest in reading the topics on their blog. We’re not all book bloggers within the same genre. I used to force myself to read their posts and come up with some sort of comment, but it just made commenting such a chore and wasn’t enjoyable for me anymore :/

I think you just have to do what works best for you, :) Usually there are more negative posts, complaining about commenting, than positive posts like these. Glad to hear you still enjoy it!

  27. Totally agree! I think it’s great to try to comment back because, yes, it shows you care enough to acknowledge them and their comment.

I feel bad that I don’t have as much time to comment back on my own blog, but I at least try to on other’s blog when they do visit (:

  28. I love commenting and am trying to be better at it. If it’s a WordPress blog then commenting is effortless but if it’s another blog engine eg. Blogspot then it’s harder to leave comments so I’m less likely to do so.

  29. Aimee you are so sweet! I have no idea how you have time to visit everyone so often! I try my very hardest to keep up with all the blogs I follow and to comment back on all the people who stop by my blog. Sometimes, it gets really overwhelming but ultimately, it pays off. I love being able to connect with people. And like you said, making people know that their posts are being read.

  30. I’m terrible at commenting back, because all the commenting I do is when I set out to clear my Bloglovin’. That means commenting once for each blog, and I don’t exactly return the favor to those who’ve comment on my blog. *hangs head in shame*

I also visit bloggers I haven’t heard of before and really check out their blog, like I’m doing with you right now, and leave a lot of comments. I also am not bashing non-commenters, I happen to have the time to do this, plus, the teacher in me likes to give the acknowledgement.
