HA! No, I don’t have fifty thousand books on my physical TBR pile, but I do have around 110, which is you know, a shitload of books.

See, I’m a fifteen year old high school girl with no job. My parents do pay for my books since I don’t get allowance. I have around 300+ physical books total (a mix of paperbacks and hardbacks), so that means I read 2 out of every 3 physical books that I purchase. (Don’t even get me started on my eBooks.)

Normally, that number would seem pretty decent, but lately I’ve been thinking about how it seems like such a waste of good money if I don’t read (or even touch) some of my physical books! They look gorgeous on my shelf and all, but these books were made to be read, and not to be just on display.

This summer (March-May), I plan to do two things:

  1. Tackle my TBR pile. I want to read at least FIFTEEN books from my physical TBR pile in those three months. I already have a list of physical books I have to read then, including some titles I DNFed but wanted to give another shot to, like Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Of course I’ll read more during the rest of the year.
  2. Sell/give away the books I don’t want to read. I have a few titles (some popular ones and others not so much) that I would love to find new homes for! I might post them here if you guys are interested. (PH only, most likely. And my mom will most likely suggest that I sell them.)

Any other tips you can share? How are your physical TBR piles looking?

  1. My TBR is out of control, physical and virtual. That’s why my co-bloggers and I are hosting our #ShelfLove challenge this year to stop buying new books and read the books we already own. It is fun to do this with others :)

  2. It feels like I have fifty thousand books on my TBR! One day I’ll die in a tragic TBR avalanche for sure…
I think I have about 100 unread books on my physical TBR, but I’ve not counted them… I need to give some more away or sell them though. I don’t even want to know how many I have on my Kindle… too depressing!
I’m doing the Popsugar reading challenge list this year using only books from my physical shelves… bit tragic that I can fill most of the categories with no trouble!

  3. My TBR pile is horrible. I was looking at all of them the other day and there are some that I’m no longer interested in reading so I really need to go through them and get rid of the ones that don’t interest me anymore…maybe one day I’ll get the time haha.

  4. I recently went through my virtual tbr list and removed books I was no longer interested in, I don’t think I could ever give away my physical books and I have a lot too and most of them I’ll never read. I did at one point before Christmas, there was a book drive that was raising money for students at my school, was thinking about donating to the one happening this semester but I haven’t looked into it any further. I don’t think I could part with them all even if I tried.

  5. Good gods, you have so many unread physical books. I think I only have 20 unread physical books on my shelf right now and er– let’s not talk about e-books because umm . . (yep that many). I always itch to buy books. Just seeing them on display in bookstores makes me want to grab them and put them straight on the counter, but ofcourse I can’t (THE STRUGGLE IS REAL) XD.

Goodluck with your TBR! <3 And selling them is a good idea. I sold some of my books through I instagram! :D

  6. Ohh summer vacation is fast approaching, isn’t it? I wish to take a three-month leave from my job to tackle my tbr. Unfortunately, that’s not going to receive a very good reaction from my boss and from my husband. Lol. Have you seen my TBR, Aimee? Come over to my house, please and help me read them all. le sigh. Good luck, hun!

  7. Man, my physical TBR is so ridiculous. It never used to be so bad, but then I discovered Goodreads and blogging, and found out about ALL THE BOOKS and yes, you know what happens next… I’m currently doing a bit of a TBR clearing- most of the books I’ve read so far this year have been from my physical TBR! The problem is though, that I keep adding to the pile lol. I feel like I’ll never be able to clear it, and I’m okay with that. I have made peace with the TBR gods haha

  8. I have a large bookshelf, but most of it is old books from when I was younger. I have very few physical TBRs that I own – those are from the second-hand bookshop – and the others I borrow from the library, which is my main source of books. I do have a number of half-read books, on my kindle, though…

I have SO MANY books that I want to read, though! Good luck with your TBR :)

  9. I’m not yet there with my physical books, but I’m getting there fast. I still continue to buy books all the time, but honestly I don’t remember when was the last time I read one. It’s always ah I can read that one wherever I want. I probably am preparing for some zombie apocalypse where I plan to sit at home and read till the end of time xD

  10. I am so bad with my TBR pile!!! I’m definitely not at 50k but it might be about 185 (physical) and another 30-40 (ebooks)… It kind of stresses me out because I’m always like “There’s nothing to read” because there’s too much and I can’t decide…

  11. I’ve got about 20 physical books and 50 ebooks in my possession. I’m using this year to make that number smaller. 70 books isn’t an awful lot (especially not compared to the numbers I’ve seen on other blogs! *cough670cough*) but they’re still books I spent money on that are just sitting there.

  12. My TBR pile has gotten under control in the last few weeks and now I’m feeling the serious pressure in regards to reading them. I’m going to have to start tackling it but I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it.

  13. My physical TBR pile has gotten out of control, but I try to get rid of books I don’t want to read as soon as I lose interest so I have shelf space for everything. I’m going to try and get a lot of reading done from my persona copies this year, and get rid of anything that I’m less than satisfied with. I don’t even count my ebooks as a TBR anymore because the number is so high.

  14. WOW ONLY 110! Oh but I guess physical books mean more haha. I only have 10 on my unread physical TBR, but that’s just because I don’t buy many books. BUT I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK.

  15. When you look at it in that way it really is an eye opener, huh? I started to lay off on buying books when I realized that each week I would have 5-8+ books in my STS, yet I only read maybe 3 books a week. Eeek!

  16. I was a little bit worried when I saw the title of this post, haha. But seriously, I think most of the bloggers I follow (including myself) have resolved to read all their physical books. I guess we’ve finally come to terms with our hoarding addiction xD What I’m doing is reading one review copy + one personal book. I’ve tackled a copy of books already. Good luck Amiee!

  17. My physical TBR is horrible. I don’t look at it anymore. It went out of control before Christmas because I thought I would read more than I had and I was afraid that the shipping cutoff dates would cut me off from the rest of the world or something. Oh, little did I know. But I have spent the past half year eating into my own TBR so it’s looking a tad better now. Hopefully you can do the same!

  18. ” but these books were made to be read, and not to be just on display.” same hence I’m going to give some away to my irl friends or throw some giveaways or send them to my intl friends, because some i don’t have any desrie to read anymore, some i hated and a lot of them are unread. I have about 100 unread physical books as well and I only read 80 books last year which means that even if I don’t buy any more books this year, I still won’t finish all of the ones I own. And I won’t stop buying. It’s pretty horrible if you think about it. I suggest to do a lot of buddyreads! That way you’re still compelled to read some titles that aren’t maybe your first choice of reading material, but you have wanted to read for ages. I hope you get your reading pile to a size that you feel more comfortable with :)

  19. Wow, 110 unread books?! I don’t know whether to think that’s impressive or horribly overwhelming! I think if it were me I’d be horribly overwhelmed, haha–good for you for holding up under the pressure. ;) But seriously, though, your plan for tackling your TBR pile sounds fantastic and I wish you all the best of luck with it! (Also, totally understand if you’re only giving away/selling books to residents of the Philippines…but if you do decide to open it up internationally I’m definitely interested in seeing which titles you want to find new homes for!)

As for me, while my Goodreads to-read shelf has only continued to grow the longer I’ve been a member, my physical TBR pile has never seemed quite so daunting to me until last fall, when I started buying books in earnest–especially with the two book festivals I attended in September and October. I still have books leftover from those several months of book-buying frenzy, plus more I’ve either bought or received (new and used) that have slowly been building up. At the moment I own about 30 books that are still unread, which is after I’ve already started to work on whittling down. It’s not nearly as huge a collection as yours, but it feels fairly large to me, so I’ve got my fingers crossed I’ll be able to make some decent headway soon. Here’s to both of us tackling our TBRs this year!

(Also, thanks for stopping by my blog! I appreciate it! :D)

  20. My TBR pile is crazy too, I think I have nearly 300 books to get through, maybe half of them are physical books, I certainly want to reduce my pile too, I’m thinking of doing a tbr jar, so that I’ll at least get through some of them. Good luck with your target Aimee! :)

  21. I definitely have too many books on my TBR, too. I have at least 100 books, probably more, in various locations (Nook, Audible, physical copies, etc) and then another 200-ish on my Goodreads TBR shelf. I realized a few years ago that will always be the case — there will always be too many books and not enough time! I focus on the books I’ve purchased and try not to think about it too much!

  22. Yeah, mine just got suddenly massive too! (OMG that comment out of context hahaha *Cough* sorry).

My physical TBR is stacked way too high for my likely and I have some E-ARCs to get to as well and, man, it’s a lot of reading. I don’t think I’ll see the sun in February

  24. My Book Outlet order set me back a bit, but I’m not doing *too* bad. I really try not to buy books unless I know I’m going to read them within a few weeks. But getting my TBR pile way down is a goal this year, for sure.
I think selling is a good idea. There are just some books you gotta let go of. I cull my Goodreads wishlist all the time. :) Good luck!

  25. I know exactly what you mean! I only have like 50 or so but that’s still heeaappssss. Especially compared to how many books that I had unread like 2 years ago. It’s crazy to think about how much my shelves have grown. I really want to tackle my TBR as well but I feel like I won’t have as much time this year as I had in the previous years. I do need to start selling or giving away my books though! I have so many that I’ll probably never read. ><

  26. Ummm. Mine just jumped to 160 this week. It is BAD. And my ebook TBR is about the same. First of all, what exactly am I supposed to DO with all these books!? I can’t part with them, because I am a borderline book hoarder at this point. The struggle is real. I like your ideas though. I am really thinking about letting a few go. Especially ones that I know I am really not likely to ever read (I used to buy basically any book that was on sale, which is a BAD idea). I have no answers, because I keep buying books, and then only reading either new books that everyone has been talking about, or ARCs, and never getting to the older books on my shelf. Good luck, I know it is not an easy task!

  27. Mine is probably around the same… Last count it was about 87 but I’ve both bought more and never counted some that I still have boxed away from when I moved over a year ago! I’m really trying hard to tackle my TBR this year and stop buying so many books because it’s like just when I make a dent in my TBR I buy more.

I’m actually planning tomorrow to go through my boxes and one of my bookshelves that I literally haven’t touched since I moved in and crammed as many books as possible on, and decide which ones I’m serious about reading and which ones I should simply trade in at the used bookstore! Unfourtantly this is more because I’m looking for a specific book I know I have somewhere than because I’m trying to organize myself. =D

Good luck! This is like one of the hardest things I book nerd has to do!

  28. My physical TBR pile is pretty manageable, but that’s because I don’t buy that much physical books. Now, ask me about my digital TBR pile and I’ll get back to you on that in a few days BECAUSE OMG I HAS FORGOT TO COUNT

  29. My physical TBR pile isn’t as big as yours, but it’s still overwhelming. And the ebooks, I don’t even want to think about them. It will take me years to tackle all of them, and I still keep adding new ones to the pile. And since I’m working full-time, I don’t get summer breaks so it’s really down to prioritizing and efficient time management. I hope you get to achieve your goal of 15 books this summer, Aimee. :)
