Wren Connolly thought she’d left her human side behind when she does five years ago and came back 178 minutes later as a Reboot. With her new abilities of strength, speed, and healing—along with a lack of emotions—Wren 178 became the perfect soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation). Then Callum 22 came along and changed everything.
Now that they’ve both escaped, they’re ready to start a new life in peace on the Reboot reservation. But Micah 163, the Reboot running the reservation, has darker plans in mind: to wipe out the humans. All of them. Micah has been building a Reboot army for years and is now ready to launch his attack on the cities. Callum wants to stick around and protect the humans. Wren wants nothing more than to leave all the fighting behind them.
With Micah on one side, HARC on the other, and Wren and Callum at odds in the middle, there’s only one option left…
It’s time for Reboots to become rebels.

For a couple of weeks, I bypassed this book when I was on trips to the bookstore because of some negative reviews I read on GR. I finally picked it up this week because I realized that if I liked Reboot, then I probably would like this too! And although it didn’t really crush my dreams or something, I was a little disappointed with how it turned out.
I loved the idea and the world-building of the entire series! I love reading dystopian books, and was really impressed with Reboot! Rebel’s plot though, had some problems.
For one, some scenes lacked emphasis. At some point, I’m pretty sure I nodded off while reading a chapter. Like, this guy is supposed to be a huge character in the story, but the things that he goes through are just quick lines without real descriptions to fully understand how important some scenes are.
Another problem with the plot was there were a lot of conflicts that became a dead end. I can’t really give a lot of solid examples since they’d be spoilers, but let’s just say that Tintera left a lot of loose ends! A lot of questions were left unanswered, even by the end of the book.
Character-wise, there weren’t really any problems aside from Wren. Wren, a girl who Rebooted 178 minutes after dying was supposed to be emotionless, which Tintera properly described in Reboot. In Rebel, however, she suddenly changed. A lot. She just seemed a little out of character to me…
The other characters were no problem, though. Callum finally crawled out of his wimpy shell, and Addie was still as badass as ever!
Even though I didn’t particularly like Wren’s sudden change of heart, I’m still very much a fan of the romance! The development was just awesome! It’s one of the few books wherein you could track the progress the couple made! It was full of feels, and very swoon-worthy.
The writing style, I don’t have a problem with. The editing was faulty, though. It was my main problem with this book! If you have the galls to publish a book, the least you could do was make sure that no errors are present! Such as:
“We had a found a way to survive.”
“Let the humans leave who want to leave.”
Despite the bad stuff though, I still feel that Rebel was an enjoyable conclusion to the Reboot series!

About Dyan
Dyan has the tendency to get irritated with most heroines. It’s just something she’s always been really over-analyzing. She tends to like the heroes/love interests more.
A shame you didn’t like it as much as Reboot (which I still have to read soon!). But I don’t think there are enough duologies out there, so I’m definitely willing to give them a try. All the fun of a series without having a billion books to read :)

Ugh, I know right! I hate series that have more than 7 or 8 books already! Anyway, Reboot was a great read for me! You should definitely try it! XD

I can’t really even remember how I felt about Reboot but I don’t think I very much LOVED it. I still have to read Rebel, but…maybe a bit later lol

I hope you do end up reading Rebel, though! I can’t stand not knowing how a series ends! :)

Glad you liked the romance, Wren being out of character for me and being mushy when Callum appeared totally turned me off the book. I thought it would have been more of a dystopian, but it was more of a romance.

I know! I was expecting a more SciFi-ish vibe, but it was really focused on the romance part of the story!

I haven’t read the first book in this series, as some of my friends didn’t like it. I’m glad that the romance is working here but they again I’m not all too happy about dead ends. I mean I like to get my questions answered. Also I’m a bit surprised with those editing errors. I mean this book is quite popular. Great review :)

It has its faults, but it was still pretty worth it! I hope you’ll read it sometime in the future!
Ikr! Maybe I got an earlier edition or something? I have no idea! I was so surprised when I read it! I would expect this from a self-published book, but not from this…

I liked it! I LIKED IT A LOT. Except, I kind of was wary of Callum’s POV. I didn’t actually like being in his head….I preferred Wren’s view of him. Wren is sooo awesome, but yes, she had a bit of a softer side here. x) I think they were sweet together and I’m glad they didn’t go through the whole time-to-have-a-love-crisis-bring-in-the-love-triangle moment. It was really well done romance wise. Although the plot? It felt kind of safe. Like I knew it’d have a happy well-wrapped-up ending. Which I’m not complaining about, per se, I was just…not head over heels in love.

Hahaha I enjoyed the romance a lot too! It was one of those few books where they weren’t so disgustingly in love! :P

I’m glad you liked the romance! I enjoyed it a lot too and really appreciated Callum’s character in this book. I actually liked this slightly better than the first but I’ve already forgotten so much about what happened plot-wise so I don’t think it left a huge impression on me. Still, it was enjoyable at the time. Great review. :)

I was so glad when Callum started standing up for himself here! And I honestly think that I liked this one a little better because of all the feels!

Great review, Dyan! I hate when lots of questions are left unanswered… Yay, Callum’s not wimpy anymore? Thank gosh, I DNFed Reboot at around 90% (I just got so bored), and Callum was one of the reasons why… That’s so weird that Wren’s character changes so abruptly… Great review!

But why?? I loved Reboot! I have no idea why, because there were also problems with it, but I just do! I hope you’ll get around to finishing it someday!

Aw, I haven’t really read Reboot yet but I’m planning to because I’ve heard it’s good. It’s disappointing to know that there were a lot of issues with the last book in this duology, like Wren’s sudden change and the loose ends. But I’m glad you still find it enjoyable overall. Thank you for your honest review, Dyan!

I honestly shouldn’t like this book, considering all the stuff that was wrong with it, but I do! Hahahaha! I hope you’ll like it too!

I’m sorry you were somewhat disappointed. I actually liked this even more than I liked Reboot, which I never thought would happen. And it’s totally true about Callum, I liked his growth in this one and how he and Wren sort of met halfway. I thought it was done very well.

I totally agree about Callum! In Reboot, I didn’t like him that much since like I said, he was a wimp, but here, he was standing up for himself and for Wren!

Laura (Laura Plus Books) has been raving a lot about Rebel, so I had pretty high hopes for it, even though I found the first book to be on the meh side. Now though… feeling a bit wary. I really dislike it when a character is supposed to be heartless or cruel or in Wren’s case, emotionless, and they turn out to be the entire opposite. I would be looking forward to seeing some anti-hero-ness, but what I get instead is your same-old heroine. BLEH.
And noooo for unresolved questions! I don’t know how I’d be able to survive that, because I’m the kind of person who NEEDS to have an explanation for everything. Something weird happened? Please explain. Something good happened, too? EXPLAIN. This would probably drive me nuts. D:
Gosh, it’s horrible that there’re such pronounced errors even in the published version. I don’t come across them often in published books, but I agree, the least you could do is at least make sure the editing is perfect before you send the book in to print. -__-
All the same, lovely review, Dyan, and I’m glad that you were still able to enjoy the book despite all those problems! Fingers crossed that I’ll like it too!

Oh, man, grammatical errors in a published book? That isn’t something that I particularly enjoy. And those aren’t even hard-to-find errors. Those are errors that could be solved by simply reading over the words. Either way, it’s great to hear that this book wasn’t terrible. I don’t think I’ll buy it though. Maybe the library? Thanks for the insight (:
