A series of natural disasters has decimated the earth. Cut off from the rest of the world, England is a dark place. The sun rarely shines, food is scarce, and groups of criminals roam the woods, searching for prey. The people are growing restless. When a ruthless revolutionary sets out to overthrow the crown, he makes the royal family his first target. Blood is shed in Buckingham Palace, and only sixteen-year old Princess Eliza manages to escape. Determined to kill the man who destroyed her family, Eliza joins the enemy forces in disguise. She has nothing left to live for but revenge, until she meets someone who helps her remember how to hope-and love-once more. Now she must risk everything to ensure that she does not become… The Last Princess.

REVIEW

I really, really hate the feeling of being confused about whether or not I liked a book, and it’s exactly how I feel about this one! There were some things that I really liked about this book, but there were some things that were so, so irritating that I wanted to stop reading!

My main problems with this book were the flow of the story, the romance, and some of the characters.

The Last Princess, compared to others, is a relatively short book. I think the action was a bit too compact—if that makes any sense—like all the action was just being forced into the book. Instead of being fast-paced and action-packed, what happened, though, was a book lacking emphasis in certain parts. In what I think was supposed to be the climax, I felt nothing. It kind of passed through it so quickly that I didn’t have time to process and connect to the scenes! Some scenes though, I felt were totally unnecessary. They just seem to pop out, out of nowhere! All in all, the plot (or writing) wasn’t smooth, and was basically all over the place.

Eliza was likeable enough. Although I felt that she was a bit naïve and sheltered at first, she grew on me towards the end. West, I felt indifferent to because he was very underdeveloped. Polly was confusing. I honestly cannot figure out how old she was. Sometimes, she acts as if she’s really, really old, but sometimes, she acts as if she’s a toddler. I swear, it’s confusing. Cornelius is a sucky villain. I didn’t get the ‘bad guy vibe’ from him.

The romance in this book was absolutely disgusting. It had no development whatsoever! It was like one minute they didn’t know each other, then the next they were sucking each other’s faces off! For a person who likes romance as much as I do, this book was one of the worst.

The writing was bland at times, but compared to others, it’s pretty okay.

Honestly, the only thing I really like about this book is the concept. The author clearly did some heavy research to make this a unique story with realistic (although not great) world-building. I loved the idea of a vigilante type princess, but it was ruined by the execution of this book.

Although there are reviews on GR praising this book, I would certainly say I would fall into the majority who hated it.

Are you a J. E. Smith fan? No? Do you plan to check out her books?

Dyan has the tendency to get irritated with most heroines. It’s just something she’s always been really over-analyzing. She tends to like the heroes/love interests more.

  1. I’ve seen this book countless times at the library but I just never picked it up (although I’ve always been a fan of the cover) I hate when I don’t know how I feel about a book, either! And this one sounded promising since the whole idea of the book seemed pretty original but It sucks that it didn’t deliver and that you were not a fan of the execution :( also major thumbs down for instalove. I HATE instalove so believed I feel your pain!

    1. It did sound promising, at first! A part of me was really excited when I picked it up! But when I started reading it, I couldn’t stop picking on it! :P

  2. Hmmm, I’m quite undecided still about the book cause the concept sounds fantastic and the summary is so intriguing, but your review has made me wary of it… too much action and not enough world building ends up leaving me unsatisfied with books!

    1. Hi Maria! Lol don’t let my review stop you from trying it! It’s just, after reading a lot of amazing books, my standards are a lot higher than they were before! You should give this a try, seriously. :)

  3. When it comes to books like this one, world-building is important, although I could overlook that if the story is as fantastic as “All Our Yesterdays”, where, in my opinion, it didn’t have enough world-building. And it seems like the romance is more lust. Why would you suck face right away? It sucks when your expectations aren’t met. :(

    1. Eeeep! All Our Yesterdays was one of the best books I’ve read, hands down!

Anyway, I agree with your statement about the lust thing, it seemed that they didn’t know each other at first, then they were sucking each other’s faces off. :P

  4. I also REALLY dislike coming out of a book not knowing what my feelings are. Usually with a book you either like it, love it, or hate, but occasionally you get that one books that just leaves you wondering “wth do I think of this” It is such a frustrating feeling

    1. I know right! I felt like I spent hours thinking about whether or not I liked this one, before finally deciding that the negative points were too many for it to be good!

  5. This issue with plot I often have. I mean it’s there the who plot nicely organized and all but I don’t feel a single thing. It all seems so flat to me. I totally know how you feel and this one sounds like a really nice story despite everything. Great review :)

    1. Yeah! I have no idea if it’s just because I’m emotionally stunted, or if the book really lacks character. The concept of this book was nice otherwise, though.

  6. Ouch. When I read insta-love in a book, I just want to punch someone in the face. I just don’t get it. I’m glad that there were at least redeemable aspects in this book but I don’t think that’s enough to make me pick this one up. Here’s hoping you have a better read next time, Dyan!

    1. Right? I mean, I honestly don’t think that love at first sight exists, so why can’t authors just give up the notion of us readers actually liking it!

  7. So disappointed this didn’t work out for you, Dyan. I hate it when the book’s blurb builds up our expectations so much, but the book itself fails to deliver. It’s one of the most horrible feelings in the bookish world… next to feeling on-the-fence about something, too! >< I can totally relate because the past ten or so books I've been reading have pretty much been either 2- or 3-star reads for me. I HATE writing reviews for those kinds of books.

Eehh, I think I get what you mean about the action. It's like the author was adding it in just so that the book could be called action-packed or something, right, or am I totally off-tangent here? xP But yeah, that sounds annoying, and if I can't feel anything while reading a book, then I'd probably give up on it because I'd be so bored.

And I don't really care much if the main character was likable or not — the writing sounds awful! Most of the time the writing doesn't really impact how much I enjoy a book, but if it's messy, then that's a huge no-no. I also think I have yet to read about a villain in a book who is actually impressive, apart from Voldemort and President Snow. So far the villains in YA books have been pretty generic and mainstream. It's getting old. :/

Horrible romance, messy writing, and confusing characters — yeah, I think it's safe to say that I'm not particularly interested in this anymore. I was really looking forward to read this before, but now I'll give it a pass. So thanks so much for the heads-up, Dyan, and wonderful review!

    1. I know right?! Lol, it was like my heart was breaking in the inside! ( I sounded so dramatic there, haha!)

I also get what you mean about the streak of horrible and so so books! I honestly can’t remember the last time I really, really enjoyed a book.

Maybe the fact that we can’t seem to enjoy stuff from this genre anymore, means that we have to change interests. :P

    1. Haha! It’s alright! After maybe a year, I won’t even remember the characters’ names! Glad you didn’t think it was horrible, though!

  8. ‘My main problems with this book were the flow of the story, the romance, and some of the characters’ . . . so, basically, the entire story ;) LOL.

Oh, God. The romance . . . what?! How can it have no development? I hate that so much ahhh :(

    1. Allie, yeah, it basically is. I just thought saying it like that would be less mean. :P

It had none. As in, they saw each other once, then they met again, then they were kissing. I swear, it was disgusting!

  9. Ehh besides the concept, this book doesn’t stand out at all :| Perhaps it would have been better if the plot was drawn out and given sufficient time to develop itself! Going to pass this one up.

Thank you for the thoughtful review :)

  10. I’ve seen this book before, it was everywhere when it first came out and at a point, I wanted to read it too. Glad I didn’t. I already have a lot of books to catch up on. I would trust your judgement on this one..
