A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces a battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

This time around, Dyan and I watched this one separately, so we weren’t able to discuss much during the movie. In order to get our thoughts together, this one’ll be a joint review!
*There might be some spoilers.
Aimee: The first thing that drew me into the movie was Angelina Jolie’s amazing portrayal of Maleficent’s character. She was poised, graceful and just oozed power. She is definitely someone I wouldn’t want to cross. Throughout the whole movie, I was whispering weird things like, “She’s soooooo badass,” to my brother!
Dyan: The way Jolie connected with her character was captivating. She has this talent of adapting herself to the role, instead of adapting the role to herself. I was rendered speechless during the movie, pulled into the world she created. (Which is quite rare, seeing as I’m very talkative during movies.)
Aimee: Exactly! I really liked Elle Fanning as Aurora as well. She nailed the naive, childish whimsy that all Disney princesses had. I wasn’t a huge fan of Sharlto Copley as Stefan, though. He did a good job with the bits where his character was insane, but I felt like his voice was a bit too high to sound like a king. Maybe it was supposed to be that way? I don’t know, but it really didn’t appeal to me.
Dyan: You’re right about Fanning’s acting skills. I honestly hated her character though. She was so naive and gullible! I mean, does Maleficent honestly looks like a fairy godmother? I also agree with you about Sharlto! During Stefan’s reappearance as an adult, I almost laughed out loud at how high pitched and quirky his voice was!
Aimee: HA! He kind of sounded like a little girl. As for Aurora thinking Maleficent’s a fairy godmother–well, I don’t think she really knows the difference (physically) of good and bad. She was brought up oddly, no?
Aimee: One thing you and I agreed on during our text discussion of the movie was how tacky and predictable (the main points. There were some minor things that I did not see coming) a lot of the things were. But it was the Disney kind of tacky that doesn’t really bother most watchers. And there are kids in the crowd, so.
Dyan: I see your point about the young audience, yes, but it couldn’t have hurt to include more plot twists!
Aimee: THE EFFECTS WERE SO, SO GOOD. The movie was visually very pleasing and I just adored being in this world. And the costumes–wow! I just felt like everything fit so well and tied up really nicely. Like everything belonged in THIS time period and in THIS world–just great!
Dyan: The effects were AWESOME. It was, graphic-wise, the best movie of 2014 so far. The creatures in the Moore look so life-like, Maleficent’s wings looked so real, and all the other visual effects were just so AWESOME.
**This part will probably contain spoilers! Watch out.
Aimee: You readers know that we’re pretty nitpicky when it comes to books and movies. My main pet peeve about the book was the three fairy godmothers. They were so, so irritating and they weren’t even trying to keep Aurora safe. Or if they did, they did a horrible job at it. I also hated how Disney butchered up their names. I can’t even remember them!
Dyan: I know, right! They were SO, SO STUPID. I wanted to rip their hair off! I can’t fathom why Stefan would entrust his only daughter to three incapable nitwits. Stefan was also a little shit! I had all these feels at first, because I’m a sucker for romances between best friends. Then he had to ruin it by being the little shit he was!
Aimee: I would say he’s a big shit, not a small shit. LOL, we sound weird. Anyway, I felt like he honestly had no purpose. Basically, he was just doing nothing and ordering people around! And when Aurora came back, he didn’t even seem happy to see her AFTER 16 YEARS. What the flying fuck?
Dyan: To add fuel to the fire, he had to hunt Maleficent down! I mean, he was the bad guy! He didn’t have the right to be angry at Maleficent! It was Maleficent that had the right to burn his face off! How dare he have the nerve to attack her??
Aimee: I say we STAB HIS EYEBALLS OUT!

I enjoyed reading your commentary on the movie. I quite enjoyed the whole movie too except that it was a bit predictable. I mean, after the Frozen’s true love’s kiss, I knew that Maleficent will be the one to break the curse too. I almost cry when Maleficent was trying to undo the curse. I love that they changed the story. That Maleficent had a reason why she cursed Aurora.
However, I hate the changes they made on the three fairy godmothers. They’re not supposed to be stupid.

Ah yes, Frozen. Haha, a friend of mine almost cried during that scene, too! :P I did like Maleficent’s background story. Very interesting.
YES! The three fairy godmothers were just like walking dolls without brains.

Angelina Jolie totally made the movie for me. She was amazing. Everything/everyone else was just meh. :P and you’re so right! I don’t think Stefan had any right to be angry.

I cannot read your whole review because I am gonna see the movie on Wednesday but it seems like you both enjoyed it despite its flaws. The setting looks indeed gorgeous from the trailer. And the main reason I’m really anticipating this movie is Angelina Jolie so I’m really glad that she acted very well in this movie. :3

I did kind of skim this because I’m still planning to see the movie, but I’m disappointed to read you didn’t love it! It looks so good, I was hoping this would be an amazing dark retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I hope I will enjoy it though, even if I don’t love it. Great review!

We did love it! Mostly. :P If dark’s what you’re looking for, though… This isn’t all that dark. D:

I’m so glad you enjoyed this movie overall c: I’m planning on seeing it with my friends soon, I’m so excited. Jolie to me really is Maleficent, just looking at the movie poster omg. She’s the epitome of the character and I can’t wait to understand her motivations and complexities. I know I’ll probably enjoy the character of Maleficent waaaay more then Aurora. I just find Maleficent to be way more interesting.
Great review! <33 can't wait to rage at Stefan, from the description of him given I think I'd rage is 100 probable.

MALEFICENT! Okay I have no idea how to feel about this movie. It was pretty decent, but I found the plotline to be a bit thin… But the little kid in me also insists that she loves Aurora more than Maleficent so… -.- (SHUT UP LITTLE KID) But like you guys, I’d be happy to smick smack “King” Stefan’s face. BLERGH. That man is so horrible. Prince Philip on the other hand :3 Okay, the kid in me also whines that there was not enough scenes with Prince Philip inside D:
But anyway, it was a decent movie, and I loved watching your conversation about it, Dyan and Aimee! :D Glad you guys enjoyed it!! ^^

Hahaha! I loved Sleeping Beauty growing up, so I did feel sympathy for Aurora. :P Prince Philip so did not get enough screen time! He did seem a bit juvenile, but cute. ;)

Thanks for the laughs over here xD KILL IT WITH FIRE is basically what I’m imagining right now. I don’t know any of the actors except for Jolie and Fanning, and now I’m pretty sure I’m going to cackle like a madwoman when I hear the dude’s voice for the first time because I’ll be hearing your “voices” in my head!

I went to watch this on Friday and adored it! I’m not normally a big fan of Jolie but thought this was an amazing portrayal. I think here was only so much they could do in terms of plot twists, as most people would be comparing this to the original Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’. I totally raged at Stefan too though!

I normally will not watch a Disney movie. I know they are great for the kids, but I find the humor silly and the stories sappy. When I saw the trailer for Maleficent, I thought I may have to give it a try. I haven’t seen it yet, but have been pulling for a darker story. This sounds at least doable. Thanks for the helpful review you two.

I do enjoy Disney movies. Sappy stories are pretty much my thing. :P Maleficent was really good, but not very dark. I still hope you enjoy this one!

Okay, I had to skip the spoilers bit since I haven’t watched it yet. I’ve never really been a fan of Angelina Jolie, but I admit, she looks (and sounds) badass. I haven’t seen anything with Elle Fanning in, so looking forward to seeing her acting skills. Shame that it was predictable, but it is a “family” movie right? So they usually are, but still, looks worth the watching! :)

She was definitely badass. She nailed the look and the attitude. I haven’t watched from Elle Fanning before, either, but I’ve heard a lot about her. It was definitely worth watching, Kirsty!

LOL, I loved this movie. I agree that the fairy godmothers were ridiculous. They kind of reminded me of the witches from . . . oh, what’s that old Disney Halloween movie with Bette Midler? Hocus Pocus! Minus the evil, obviously, but the air-headed obliviousness–definitely. And I wanted to stab Stefan’s eyeballs out too ;)
