Random Recommendations

Random Recommendations is another feature here at Deadly Darlings, where I pick a random theme or genre, as well as a random date to post, and recommend a random number of books from that theme or genre. I will also ask the authors (if possible) to recommend similar reads so you guys don’t run out if you like the ones I recommended! If I’m unable to contact the authors, I will give recommendations myself!

This time around, the recommendations I’ll be giving are from the science fiction genre! In no particular order, of course:

1.) The Lunar Chronicles series (check out my reviews for Cinder, Scarlet and Cress) by Marissa Meyer

Why I Recommend Cinder: I was really scared to read Cinder. It started off a little slowly for me, but once the story picked up, I was absolutely hooked! The world building was great, the characters were unique and I loved Cinder’s voice!

Marissa Meyer Says: I think The Lunar Chronicles are for readers who love lots of action and high-stakes plots, mixed with plenty of romance and humor and an endearing cast of characters. Fans of “space operas” such as Star Wars or Firefly, or someone who’s looking for a fairy tale retelling with a twist. (Or, about a hundred twists…)

2.) Of Beast and Beauty (see my review) by Stacey Jay

Why I Recommend Of Beast and Beauty: There was hype building around this novel which made me want to read it, initially. But once I read the synopsis, I knew it was going to be a fabulous novel, and it was. I loved the world, the characters, and especially the wonderful relationship that blossomed between our two amazing narrators.

Stacey Jay Says: I think people who enjoy darkly romantic, twisted fairy tales will enjoy my book.

Wait around for our next set of recommendations, guys! I might ask Dyan to give some next time as well! You can suggest topics or genres or themes for us to recommend from here!

YOUR TURN: Do you have any awesome science fiction books to recommend to us?

Wait around for our next recommendations, guys!

    1. Hope you love Cress, Emily! Mmm. Thorne. <3 Same here! Blogging has gotten me into historical romance which I wouldn't normally read. :)

  1. Oh this is an AWESOME post idea! I love that you actually ask the authors…that’s sooo cool. :) (Plus you’re brave! I’m seriously too much in awe to talk to authors mostly. XD Yup, I’m one of those dorky ones.) I’ve read almost all of the Cinder recs, so woot! Buuut, not the CJ Redwine. I want to, though! I’ve seen her tweets and she’s hilarious.

    1. Thanks, Cait! A lot of authors are actually really nice and respond to e-mails, tweets, etc. ^_^ I read Defiance and actually DNFed it, haha! But Dyan really loved it, so I hope it turns out better for you! :D

  2. I loved Cinder and Of Beast and Beauty! Such great books :D
I’ve heard such great things about The Program! I really should get around to reading it at some point- if the TBR pile ever allows for it (unlikely at this point lol)

Hmm…sci-fi recs: Insignia by S.J. Kincaid (so few people have read this book! But it’s so awesome)
I also really like Earth Girl by Janet Edwards, but I’m not sure it’s the sort of book you’d like haha.
Also All Our Yesterdays omg so good :D

    1. Yes, they were both lovely! I enjoyed The Program as well, but it might not be for everyone. :)

I have been wanting to pick up Insignia but I haven’t been seeing a lot of reviews so I never bought it. :O Earth Girl is on my wishlist as well! <3 Dyan and I both loved All Our Yesterdays! Thanks for the recs, Nara! :D

  3. I’ve been hesitant to read Of Beast and Beauty because Beauty and The Beast is my favorite Disney movie and it’s the first thing I thought about when I read the blurb. And I’ll probably compare it a lot too. But I’m going to give it a shot. =)

As for recommendations, I have a few!
    – Control by Lydia Kang
    – Freak of Nature by Julia Crane
    – Across the Universe by Beth Revis
    – All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill

    1. I love the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast! So swoon-worthy, haha! But don’t worry, Of Beast and Beauty shall not disappoint! :D

Control will be our monthly readalong in the blog where I co-blog! So stoked to read it! <3 I've never heard of Freak of Nature, though. I'll check it out! I loved both Across the Universe and All Our Yesterdays. <3

  4. The Lunar Chronicles series is amazing! I’ve been curious about Of Beast and Beauty, but I haven’t heard too much about it.

I love how you’ve gotten the authors to make recommendations, based off of their book too – that’s so awesome!

    1. The buzz died down a few months after Of Beast and Beauty was released, so it’s no surprise that you haven’t heard a lot about it. But it was a really great read!

Thank you! I love the authors who are kind enough to waste a few minutes to respond to me, haha!

  5. I’m so with you on the Lunar Chronicles, that series seriously rocks. I was so reluctant to read Cinder at first, but man, did it ever turn out good. I haven’t read Of Beast and Beauty, though. I remember when it was making the rounds on the blogs, but I never got around to reading it.

  6. New to my TBR: Defiance, Of Beast and Beauty, Under The Never Sky and Chime! Well they’re not exactly new since I’ve been meaning to read them for FOREVER. They’ve just become a little more of a priority. I can’t think of any good Sci-Fis off the top of my head but there are just so many amazing ones!

    1. I hope you enjoy them, Laura! Of Beast and Beauty was wonderful! Chime and Under the Never Sky were good. Defiance was a DNF for me, sadly. ;( But hopefully you’ll like it better! Right? Too many books to name!

  7. I’ve read some of the books mentioned here and loved them, so I know I will probably love the recommended reads! This is such a great feature! I just sent in a recommendation too for a genre – something I love and would like to read more about! :)

    1. I hope you enjoy both of them, Charlene! =) And yay–I’ve seen your suggestion and Dyan and I will see if we know any awesome books. ;)

  8. I love this! I have read and enjoyed all of Marissa Meyer’s suggestions (and the Lunar Chronicles of course!). I’VE STILL NOT READ OF BEAST AND BEAUTY! But I do quite like Daughter of Smoke and Bone and The Program, so that bodes well. :D

  9. Nice post! I read and loved Cinder, UTNS was okay but the series got better as it progressed, I didn’t really like Defiance and I still have yet to read Shadow and Bone

    Like

    1. Seems like we have the same taste, Melanie! x) I enjoyed UTNS but it wasn’t amazing, but I haven’t read the sequels yet. Defiance was a DNF for me, sadly. I read Shadow and Bone and thought it was just okay.

    1. Defiance was a DNF for me, sadly. D: Shadow and Bone and Under the Never Sky were more enjoyable, but neither really wowed me. I hope you enjoy them more than I did! And not a lot of people have read Of Beast and Beauty, so I hope you read it soon, Jeann!

  10. Hi Girls! I’ve seen around Cinder a lot but haven’t been able to read it, and the sequels. But with the comparison of Star Wars I’m definitely finding my way to read it this summer :D I hadn’t heard of the other book but it sounds interesting enough, and I love the Belle from Disney so it should be cool to read a twist of the “normal” story. In Science Fiction I loved Across The Universe and anyone who loves science, a bit of romance, and mystery should love it with it’s tons of science stuff and all. Also, great blog! :D
