And girl created boy…

In the beginning, there was an apple—

And then there was a car crash, a horrible injury, and a hospital. But before Evening Spiker’s head clears a strange boy named Solo is rushing her to her mother’s research facility. There, under the best care available, Eve is left alone to heal.

Just when Eve thinks she will die—not from her injuries, but from boredom—her mother gives her a special project: Create the perfect boy.

Using an amazingly detailed simulation, Eve starts building a boy from the ground up. Eve is creating Adam. And he will be just perfect… won’t he?

REVIEW

I picked up this book mainly because of two things:

  1. The cover was pretty (let’s face it, everyone judges books by their covers) and
  2. It was a retelling.

Anyway, I bought Adam & Eve for roughly 16 dollars (a hardcover), and it was so not worth it.

Let’s start with the plot. I liked the plot–it was unique and weird, and I have no idea how the authors thought of it (it was about genetic modifications and shit, and I didn’t really understand all the sophisticated science talk). I especially liked the tag line on the cover, “And girl created boy,” mainly because I’m a feminist through and through.

The characters, on the other hand, were underdeveloped and irritating. The only character I kinda liked was Aislin, and that was just sometimes. Evening (Eve) was naïve, selfish, and just plain irritating. Solo was okay, except for the fact that he was highly bipolar (Aimee! There are more of your kind!).

The pacing was okay, although there are times when I felt like I skipped a huge chunk of the book, especially in the later half of the novel which became kind of confusing. The so-so writing made the book slightly less irritating though.

Now, to the most highly awaited part of the book (for me, anyway), the romance! (MAJOR-ISH SPOILERS AHEAD, GUYS!) I honestly expected that it will be Eve and Adam who will end up together, because it was like ON THE TITLE. So I was kinda irritated when I was proven wrong (no one likes to be wrong, so don’t judge me). Anyway, unless you are weird person who ships people in every movie/book seen/read (i.e. me), I don’t think this is book where you almost die from feels. I mean, in the first half of the book, Solo keeps on repeating stuff like he has to get rid of Eve and such (not really romantic) and Eve was like, “Who is he again?” Point is, the romance was only evident in about the last quarter of the book.

All in all, I was disappointed, I wanted to enjoy this book much more than I did. The only thing I gained from it was a pretty book to add to my shelf, and some gross mental images.

  1. Ugh, gosh. This book. I didn’t like it much, either. I can’t even remember much of it, but all I know is that I didn’t like the characters. I thought I would have enjoyed this book a lot, but alas, things cannot be sometimes. Great review!
    Cheers!

  2. It has a good cover, and it’s a retelling…yup. That would be enough for me to pick up this book also (: The plot definitely sounds interesting. However I don’t know how invested I’d be in it due to the characters. They don’t sound like my cup of tea in any circumstance. Haha, I didn’t read the spoilers in this review, though I honestly don’t see myself reading this book in the future. What can I say? I just really have an aversion to spoilers lol :P

    Lovely review <33

  3. Lovely review, I was wondering why I hadn’t heard much about this one but now you’ve cleared it up. Besides the awesome cover and sci-fi plot, promising retelling, there doesn’t sound to be much going on for this book. Too bad about the romance though!

  4. I actually liked this one! I thought it was pretty fun. My biggest gripe was the ending….I felt like they got to the “word quota” or something and then just rushrushrushed to the end! Like…what?!! I liked that Eve and Adam didn’t get together. I thought it kind of broke the stereotype! The ending was probably my only killer.

Well done on finishing it! Seems like I didn’t miss out on much.

  6. Awww, I was seriously kinda curious after I read THAT superawesome synopsis but then you said that ‘it’s not worth it’ :(
But then again, I won’t be interested in underdeveloped characters, though. Thanks for pointing all these points out, Dyan! Another book to be avoided, then :p

  7. I also picked this up because of the cover, last year or so! And yeah, I agree with the characters. The premise sounded so good though, that I was disappointed in the book.

  8. I don’t remember seeing a positive review for this one. I remember being super attracted to it for its cover, and then the concept sounded really interesting, but you’ve just given me one more review that speaks to why despite its potential, it fell flat.

At least it’ll look pretty on your shelf?
