What if your destiny was to kill the one you love?

One moment. One foolish desire. One mistake. And Corinthe lost everything.

She fell from her tranquil life in Pyralis Terra and found herself exiled to the human world. Her punishment? To make sure people’s fates unfold according to plan. Now, years later, Corinthe has one last assignment: kill Lucas Kaller. His death will be her ticket home.

But for the first time, Corinthe feels a tingle of doubt. It begins as a lump in her throat, then grows toward her heart, and suddenly she feels like she’s falling all over again—this time for a boy she knows she can never have. Because it is written: one of them must live, and one of them must die.

In a universe where every moment, every second, every fate has already been decided, where does love fit in?

newDEC2013 ReviewDyan and I buddy read the eARC of this one and decided to do a spoiler-free discussion/joint review! Thank you to Random House Children’s for sending us a copy!

Dyan: The plot is definitely different from the others. The idea was well developed and it was interesting. I liked Corinthe at first, as she seemed to be independent and strong. Further into the story, though, you can just feel her desperation and confusion and it was very irritating.

Aimee: Corinthe… *cringe* I disliked her from page one. I don’t know–she just had this really boring personality that I couldn’t care less about! I just wanted to punch her every. Time. She. Talked. But yeah, the plot seemed pretty unique. The writing style was a bit flat though, so I couldn’t really enjoy what the story had to offer. How did you like Luc and the romance?

Dyan: Now, Luc, I really liked. He was so caring for his sister, and he was concerned about strangers, and he sounded so sweet and all! Then, he fell through a portal thing, and he became irritating as well. Did they even have a romance? They were just obsessed with killing each other.

Aimee: Yes there was! Luc was all “She’s so beautiful,” and Corinthe pretty much questioned everything she believed in just for him. I thought Luc was alright at first too. Then when he met Cornithe, things went downhill with his character and I just wanted to slap some sense into him.

Dyan: Well, the gist of it is that neither of us could finish this one.

The statistics? Dyan read until 49%, while Aimee could only take it until 38%. That just means Dyan has a higher level of tolerance, huh? The gist?:

  2. Hmm, these characters sound frustrating. I wasn’t going to read this one but now I’ll be going out of my way to avoid them, ha! Hope your next read is better :(

    1. I think the thing that bored me most was the writing. And the characters. The plot was promising, but I just couldn’t go on. I hope so too, Alise :(

  3. I’ve seen this book around a lot, and a lot of negative reviews follow it. Really don’t feel like I’ll be reading this one. I really dislike when a book has some okay characters and then because of a romance they turn out to be intolerable. Nice mini review guys (:

    1. I kind of regretted requesting it. I’m trying to ban myself from requesting books actually–I have too much that I really need to finish. :O

  4. Oh man, you guys got further than I did! I knew pretty quickly that this wasn’t for me, but I pushed for about 4 chapters or so before I gave up. I thought it was kind of a mess, too. :/ It’s too bad.

I enjoyed your review discussion, though. We’re doing more of those on TMG, too, and it’s so fun to talk about the book with a friend.
